Your college GPA is your total quality points ÷ your GPA credit hours, and a course’s quality points are its grade points × its credit hours. On plus/minus points, an A (4.0) and a B+ (3.33) in 3-credit courses and an A− (3.67) in a 2-credit course give 12 + 9.99 + 7.34 = 29.33 quality points; 29.33 ÷ 8 = a 3.67 GPA.

Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table of grade codes below shows two universities’ rules.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.

Credits decide how much a course counts
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours. Add those quality points, then divide by the total GPA credit hours.
GPA = total quality points ÷ GPA credit hours
For example, on UT Austin’s plus/minus points an A in a three-credit class earns 12 quality points. A B+ in another three-credit class earns 9.99, and an A- in a two-credit class earns 7.34. The total is 29.33 across eight credits: a GPA of 3.66625, displayed as 3.67.
Change the term name on any course to group several semesters. The totals still weight each course by its credits; they do not average semester GPAs equally, which is why a cumulative GPA can differ from the average of your semester GPAs.
Which courses belong in the total?
Use GPA hours, which may differ from credits earned toward graduation. A passed pass/fail class can earn credit toward your degree and still add nothing to your GPA.
Choose “Not counted” as the grade for a course that stays out of your GPA, or untick “Include in GPA”. The course stays on your list and adds no grade points and no GPA hours. The table below shows what common grade codes do at two universities.
To combine an earlier record, open Include your earlier GPA. For a goal beyond the entered courses, open target GPA. If the required future average exceeds the selected maximum, the goal is out of reach over those credits.
What do W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do to a GPA?
It depends on your school. The same code can be left out at one university and count as zero points at another, so check your registrar's rule before you enter it.

F is 0 points on every scale in this calculator, the same as UF's E. UF's letter values (A 4.0, A- 3.67, B+ 3.33 and so on down to D- 0.67) match the plus/minus 4.0 scale the calculator starts on, which uses UT Austin’s published points, so it works for UF grades. The I, W and other codes in its grade menu follow UT Austin, which leaves them out of the GPA. UF counts an I as 0 points, so for a UF I choose F, as the note above the courses says.

Is my GPA good?
It depends on what the GPA is for, and each school draws its own lines. There is no single US standard: at the University of Florida alone, the Dean's List line runs from 3.20 to 3.75 depending on the college. The table shows the published undergraduate lines at two universities as examples, each with the other conditions its catalog sets, such as a credit load; “Full rule” opens the catalog page.
