UT Dallas’s GPA divides grade points by the hours with a letter grade: A+ and A are both 4.000, A− 3.670, B+ 3.330 and so on down to D− 0.670 and F 0. I, CR, NC and W stay out of it, only UT Dallas grades count, and a retake drops only your first attempt from the GPA.
UTD’s points: A+ 4.00, A 4.00, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows UTD’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at UT Dallas
UT Dallas multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at UT Dallas
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

Code
What it means
In the UT Dallas GPA
W
Withdrew, from census day to the ninth week of a long semester (WC, WD, WI, WU, WM and WW are withdrawals for non-academic reasons)
No grade points: the scale gives points to A+ through F only. A withdrawal still counts as one of your three attempts at the course, and Texas allows six over your undergraduate career if you started college in fall 2007 or later. Rule
CR or NC
Credit (C or better) or No Credit (below C) in a course taken credit/no credit
Left out of the GPA. You can take 12 hours this way at most, or 20% of your UT Dallas upper-division work if that is smaller, and it can affect honors. Rule
I
Incomplete, for a student who is passing and has finished at least 75% of the course
Left out of the GPA. Finish the work in the time your instructor sets, at most eight weeks into the next long semester, or it turns into an F automatically. Rule
Repeated course
You took the same course again
You can retake a course for a better grade after a C− or lower, three graded attempts at most (withdrawals count). When you retake it, your first attempt leaves the GPA, but every later attempt counts, so a second retake puts both retake grades in your GPA. Every grade stays on your transcript. A Texas resident taking a class a third time pays the nonresident rate for it. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Only UT Dallas grades count in your GPA and for honors; accepted transfer credit counts only toward the hours you need to graduate. An F at UT Dallas retaken at another college can bring the credit back, but the F stays in your GPA. Rule
UT Dallas rounds every GPA to three decimals and shows it that way on transcripts. The calculator shows two.

Academic Watch, noted on your academic record
On watch you need a semester GPA of 2.200 and can’t withdraw or take an incomplete. Missing those requirements brings Academic Warning, and missing them again on warning brings suspension. A 2.000 cumulative GPA, from UT Dallas courses only, returns you to good standing; your major-related courses are expected to average 2.000 too. Full rule
3.8 to 4.00 in a fall or spring semester
Dean’s List
At least 12 UT Dallas hours that semester, counting only graded courses that go into your GPA. Full rule
4.00 in both the fall and the spring semester
President’s List, given since fall 2026
At least 12 graded UT Dallas hours in each semester of the academic year. Full rule
3.400 at least, and a yearly line set by your school
Latin honors: summa cum laude for the GPA of the top 5% of your school’s graduates, magna cum laude the next 10%, cum laude the next 15%
The lines are set each summer from your school’s graduates of the last six long semesters, so they change from year to year. You need at least 45 graded UT Dallas hours, and only UT Dallas grades count. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
UT Dallas drops only your first attempt. A 4-hour F in Calculus, retaken for a D and then again for a B, plus a 3-hour A: the F leaves your GPA, but the D and the B both stay, (1.0 × 4 + 3.0 × 4 + 4.0 × 3) ÷ 11 = 2.55.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your UT Dallas academic record.
For any other college, the college GPA calculator starts on the common plus/minus 4.0 points and takes your school’s own. Cumulative GPA combines terms you already have, and the GPA guide answers what a GPA means.
