UVU GPA calculator

UVU grades on a plus/minus 4.0 scale where a plus adds 0.4: an A is 4.0, an A− 3.7, a B+ 3.4, a C+ 2.4 and a D+ 1.4, down to a D− at 0.7 and an E (failing) at 0.0. Retake a course and only your highest grade counts in your GPA, with the other attempts marked E for excluded on your transcript. W, I, audit and credit/no credit grades don’t count, but an I you don’t make up within a year becomes an E.

UVU’s points: A 4.00, A− 3.70, B+ 3.40, B 3.00 and so on.

Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.

Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?

These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.

Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?

Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows UVU’s.

One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?

Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.

Course groups and equal weights

Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.

Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet

Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Save my courses or compare versions

Nothing is sent to us. Untick the box to forget them.

To compare plans, save the courses as they are now as a version, change them, and save again. Versions stay in this browser until you delete them.

Open a file you saved with “Save the versions to a file”, in this browser or another. It is read in your browser and sent nowhere.

Grade points at UVU

UVU multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at UVU

A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

How UVU counts each code
CodeWhat it meansIn the UVU GPA
A−, B+ … D−Plus and minus gradesA plus is worth 0.4 more than the letter and a minus 0.3 less: B+ 3.4, C+ 2.4 and D+ 1.4; A− 3.7, B− 2.7, C− 1.7 and D− 0.7. There’s no A+. Your GPA is your grade points divided by the semester hours you attempted. Rule
EFailing: inadequate mastery or repeated absencesCounts 0.0, with its hours, in your GPA. An I you don’t make up within a year turns into an E. Don’t confuse it with the E printed beside a retaken course on your transcript: that one means the attempt is excluded from your GPA (an I there means included). Rule
UWUnofficial withdrawal: you failed for not attending, without withdrawing (given until fall 2024)Counts 0.0, like an E. UVU stopped giving UW grades in fall 2024, but older transcripts can show them. Now, if you stop going to class without withdrawing, you may get a failing grade instead. Rule
WOfficial withdrawal after the drop deadlineNot computed in your GPA. A class you drop by the drop deadline doesn’t appear on your transcript; after it, a withdrawal shows as a W with no refund. Withdrawing after the withdrawal deadline takes a petition with documented extenuating circumstances beyond your control. Rule
IIncomplete: your instructor agreed to give you time after the semester to finishNot computed in your GPA. You must make it up within one year, or it becomes an E. You can’t finish an incomplete by retaking the course: to retake instead, you accept the grade you earned and the highest grade counts. Resolve any I before you graduate. Rule
AUAuditNot computed in your GPA. Rule
CR, NCCredit granted, or no credit grantedNeither is computed in your GPA. Credit by exam (AP, CLEP, DSST, IB) and credit for prior learning are recorded as CR, so they stay out of your GPA too. Rule
TIn progress (temporary status)Not computed in your GPA. Rule
MMissing gradeDoesn’t count toward your GPA. Resolve it before you graduate. Rule
A grade with R addedA record adjustment or academic renewalAn R added to a grade takes it out of your GPA, though the original grade stays on your transcript. A record adjustment, for documented extenuating circumstances beyond your control, applies only to E, UW and W grades. Academic renewal removes one whole semester of undergraduate work from your earned credits and cumulative GPA (not single courses, and not work used toward a credential you already hold); you can use it once, and then you can’t receive academic honors. Financial aid still uses the original grades. Rule
Repeated courseYou took the same course againYou can retake a course to earn a better grade, registering and paying as usual. Only the highest grade counts in your GPA; every other attempt is excluded, and all attempts stay on your transcript marked E (excluded) or I (included). You get no additional credit for repeating a course you passed unless its number ends in R or Z (repeatable for credit). A class you withdrew from isn’t posted as a repeat. Under Policy 522 (effective March 20, 2025), a course you retake at another school can be accepted as the repeat of your UVU course: transfer grades don’t count in your GPA, but if the transfer grade is your highest, your UVU attempts are excluded from your GPA. A course repeated more than once is charged at the full cost of instruction unless the repeat is for a cause beyond your control or your program prescribes it. Other schools may count your excluded grades. Rule
Transfer creditGrades from another collegeTransfer courses numbered 1000 or above with a D− or higher earn credit at UVU, but transferred grades aren’t calculated in your UVU GPA, including courses from international schools. Courses from a quarter-system school convert to semester hours at three to two. There’s no limit on transfer credit, but you still need UVU’s residency hours, total credits and GPA to graduate. A higher grade earned elsewhere in a course you took at UVU takes your UVU attempts out of your GPA (see the retake rule). Rule

A worked example

Only your highest attempt counts, and a B+ is worth 3.4. Say you earn an A− and a B+ in two 3-credit courses and an E in a 4-credit course, then retake that course and earn a C. The C replaces the E in your GPA: (3.7 × 3 + 3.4 × 3 + 2.0 × 4) ÷ 10 = 29.3 ÷ 10 = 2.93. Counting both attempts would have given (3.7 × 3 + 3.4 × 3 + 0.0 × 4 + 2.0 × 4) ÷ 14 = 29.3 ÷ 14 = 2.09.

The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your UVU academic record.
