Illinois Tech grades in whole letters with no pluses or minuses: A is 4.00, B 3.00, C 2.00, D 1.00 and E, the failing grade, 0.00. An NA (you never attended) counts the same as an E. W, I, R, X, AU, S, U and the P and F used in continuing education courses stay out of your GPA, and so do grades you transfer in; a Fail under the pass/fail option is entered as an E and counts. If you repeat a course for a grade exclusion (six allowed), only the second grade counts, even if it’s lower.
Illinois Tech’s points: A 4.00, B 3.00, C 2.00, D 1.00 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows Illinois Tech’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at Illinois Tech
Illinois Tech multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at Illinois Tech
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.
How Illinois Tech counts each code
Code
What it means
In the Illinois Tech GPA
E
Fail
Illinois Tech’s failing grade: 0.00 points, and the hours count in your GPA. An unfinished I turns into an E on the published deadline of the next term, and a Fail under the pass/fail option is entered as an E too. Rule
NA
Non-attendance
Means you never attended or took part in the course. You get NA as a midterm grade if you don’t attend and don’t officially withdraw, and since Fall 2023 it can be a final grade that counts the same as an E in your GPA. Rule
I
Incomplete
A temporary grade you request in writing before finals week, only for illness or unusual or unforeseeable circumstances, with a written agreement on the remaining work. It stays out of your GPA while it stands, but it lapses to an E on the published deadline of the next term, and an I in a required course defers graduation a semester. Rule
R
Research (work continues past the term)
Works like an I until the final letter grade is submitted, but it doesn’t expire or turn into another grade. Rule
W
Withdrawal
Posted when you withdraw by the deadline at about 60% of the term; it doesn’t affect your GPA. Simply not attending isn’t a withdrawal. For aid progress a W counts as an unsuccessful completion. Rule
S / U
Satisfactory / unsatisfactory
The pass/fail basis for select courses; neither carries graded hours. You may elect pass/fail in up to three eligible courses, declared by the end of registration: an A through D becomes an S that stays out of your GPA, but a Fail is entered as an E and counts. Rule
P / F
Pass / fail in continuing education
Used for non-degree continuing education courses and stays out of your GPA. In a degree course the failing grade is E, not F. Rule
AU
Audit
You pay full tuition, take no exams and get no credit, and the course doesn’t count toward your degree or your GPA. You can’t switch to or from audit after registration closes. Rule
X, NG
No grade submitted; non-graded
X is a temporary grade posted when the instructor misses the grade deadline, later changed to a final grade. NG is for a course with no evaluation recorded. Neither is a graded hour. Rule
TR
Transfer course
Credit accepted from another college. Its grades aren’t included in your Illinois Tech cumulative or major GPA. Rule
Repeated course
You took the same course again
You can repeat up to six courses for a grade exclusion: three at the 100–200 level and three at the 300–400 level, with unused lower-level repeats not carrying over. Request it on the grade exclusion form during registration, take the repeat within a calendar year or the next time the course is offered (whichever is longer), and repeat any one course only once. Both grades stay on your transcript, but only the second counts in your GPA, even if it’s lower, unless the second grade is I, R, S, U, W, X or AU. Repeating a C or B needs your advisor’s approval, courses no longer offered can’t be repeated this way, and exclusions must be requested before your degree is conferred. An Illinois Tech course can be repeated only at Illinois Tech, a pass/fail course only as pass/fail, and financial aid covers one repeat of a course you passed. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Transfer grades aren’t included in your Illinois Tech cumulative or major GPA, and Latin honors count only Illinois Tech courses. A course transfers only with the equivalent of a C or better (a C− doesn’t), you can bring at most 68 hours from a two-year college, and your last 45 semester hours must be at Illinois Tech. Once enrolled, you need an approved transfer credit petition before taking a course elsewhere, and you get no transfer credit for a course you already completed at Illinois Tech. For aid progress, accepted transfer hours count as both attempted and earned. Rule

What it means
Also required
2.00 cumulative GPA
Good standing; below it, academic probation
Good standing also needs a 2.00 major GPA and a 1.85 term GPA, and some programs add requirements. Academic Affairs reviews standing every semester. The catalog’s probation page says students below a line are placed on probation; its Change of Status page says they are subject to being placed on it. On probation you can’t take more than 15 hours without approval, hold student office, or do Co-Op without the Academic Standing Committee’s approval. Full rule
1.85 term GPA
Below it, academic probation
Applies each semester, even when your cumulative GPA is above 2.00. Full rule
2.00 major GPA
Below it, academic probation
Every undergraduate with a declared major has a major GPA, usually from courses in the major’s academic unit. It is also a graduation minimum. Full rule
Two consecutive semesters on probation
Candidate for academic dismissal
You may instead be required to change your major or take a leave of absence. If a dismissal appeal is approved, you return on probation and may have conditions. Full rule
2.00 cumulative and 2.00 major GPA
Graduation minimum
Plus at least 120 credit hours. If you finish your courses below the minimum, you may, with permission, take more courses to raise your GPA. Full rule
3.50 term GPA, 12 graded hours
Dean’s List
You need at least 12 graded credit hours that semester. Full rule
3.85–4.00
Summa cum laude
Requires at least 60 graded credit hours at Illinois Tech; only Illinois Tech courses count. Gold honors cord. Full rule
3.70–3.849
Magna cum laude
Same 60 graded hours at Illinois Tech. Silver honors cord. Full rule
3.50–3.699
Cum laude
Same 60 graded hours at Illinois Tech. White honors cord. Full rule
2.0 cumulative, 1.85 term, 2.0 major GPA
Satisfactory academic progress for financial aid
You must also complete two-thirds of the hours you attempt and stay within 150% of your program’s timeframe. Checked every term; aid continues during a warning term. E, W and I count as unsuccessful completions, and audited courses count as attempted hours. Full rule
3.00 cumulative at your previous college
Recommended for transfer admission
Transfer applicants must also be in good academic standing at their previous colleges. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
Illinois Tech’s grade exclusion swaps the grade outright. Say you take three 3-credit courses and earn an A, a B and an E: (4.00 × 3 + 3.00 × 3 + 0 × 3) ÷ 9 = 21 ÷ 9 = 2.33. Repeat the E course for a grade exclusion within a year and earn a C, and only the second grade is used: (12 + 9 + 2.00 × 3) ÷ 9 = 27 ÷ 9 = 3.00. It cuts both ways, since the second grade counts even if it’s lower: repeat the B as well (that needs your advisor’s approval) and earn a C, and you’re at (12 + 2.00 × 3 + 6) ÷ 9 = 24 ÷ 9 = 2.67. If the second grade is an I, R, S, U, W, X or AU, the second-grade-only rule doesn’t apply.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your Illinois Tech academic record.
