SGPA to CGPA and percentage calculator
Your CGPA is the average of your SGPAs weighted by each semester’s credits: multiply each SGPA by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. Then convert that CGPA with your university’s formula; Anna University’s, for example, is CGPA × 10. A plain average of the SGPAs is always right when every semester carried the same credits; when the credits differ, it can be off.
Example CGPA
(7.2 × 18 + 8.6 × 26 + 9.1 × 22) ÷ 66 credits = 553.4 ÷ 66
A plain average of the SGPAs would give 8.30, because the semesters carry different credits.
Choose your university for the percentage; the table below shows it under every published rule.
| University | Formula | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| VTU Visvesvaraya Technological University’s 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes only | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 76.3% |
| Anna University B.E. and B.Tech. students of Anna University’s non-autonomous affiliated colleges under Regulations 2021 and 2025 | CGPA × 10 | 83.8% |
| JNTUH JNTU Hyderabad B.Tech. regular students of non-autonomous colleges under the R22 regulations (from 2022–23) | (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | 78.8% |
| SPPU Savitribai Phule Pune University, from the conversion sheet on its examination website | CGPA × 8.9 | 74.58% |
Why credits matter
A semester with more credits holds more of your record, so it pulls your CGPA harder. JNTU Hyderabad’s regulations, for example, define the CGPA as the total credit points of every registered course divided by the total credits registered, across all semesters; multiplying each SGPA by its credits gives the same total.
Take SGPAs of 7.2 over 18 credits, 8.6 over 26 and 9.1 over 22:
(7.2 × 18 + 8.6 × 26 + 9.1 × 22) ÷ 66 = 553.4 ÷ 66 = 8.38
The plain average of the three SGPAs is 8.30, 0.08 lower, because the light first semester counts as much as the heavy second one. Your grade sheet shows each semester’s credits beside its SGPA.
From CGPA to percentage
Convert the CGPA rounded to two decimals, as grade sheets print it. In the example, 8.38 becomes 83.8% under Anna University’s rule (CGPA × 10), 76.3% under VTU’s ((CGPA − 0.75) × 10), 78.8% under JNTUH’s ((CGPA − 0.5) × 10) and 74.58% under SPPU’s (CGPA × 8.9).
The universities write these formulas for the CGPA. Applying the same formula to one semester’s SGPA is plain arithmetic, not a conversion your university has published for a semester; your official percentage comes from the CGPA.
When your grade sheet disagrees
A course you failed and cleared later can change your CGPA in a way the SGPAs alone do not show, because universities differ in which semester counts the cleared course. If your latest grade sheet prints a CGPA, that figure is the one to convert.
