UVA GPA calculator

UVA’s GPA divides grade points by the credits that count: A+ and A are both 4.000, A− 3.700, B+ 3.300 and so on down to F at 0. CR, NC, W, S, U, AU, IN (incomplete) and NG stay out of it.

UVA’s points: A+ 4.00, A 4.00, A− 3.70, B+ 3.30 and so on.

Include your earlier GPA

Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.

Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?

These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.

Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?

Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows UVA’s.

One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?

Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.

Course groups and equal weights

Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.

Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet

Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Save my courses or compare versions

Nothing is sent to us. Untick the box to forget them.

To compare plans, save the courses as they are now as a version, change them, and save again. Versions stay in this browser until you delete them.

Open a file you saved with “Save the versions to a file”, in this browser or another. It is read in your browser and sent nowhere.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at UVA

A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

How UVA counts each code
CodeWhat it meansIn the UVA GPA
WWithdrawalLeft out of the GPA. Rule
CR or NCCredit or no credit (UVA’s pass/fail option)Left out of the GPA. Rule
S or USatisfactory or unsatisfactoryLeft out of the GPA. Rule
INIncompleteLeft out at first. Becomes an F, counted as 0, 35 days after the last day of exams unless the instructor allows more time. Rule
NGNo gradeLeft out of the GPA, but it rules out the dean’s list that semester. Rule
A+Highest letter gradeWorth 4.000, the same as an A. Rule
Repeated courseYou took the same course againAfter a D+, D, D− or F, a course retaken once at UVA for a letter grade (Fall 2024 or later; Fall 2025 or later in Arts & Sciences) counts only the higher grade, for the first 9 repeated credits only; a course passed with C− or better follows each school’s rule (Arts & Sciences counts only the first grade, Engineering counts both). Rule
Transfer creditGrades from another collegeOnly credits transfer to UVA; grades from other schools don’t count in the UVA GPA. Rule

UVA GPA lines

These are UVA’s published undergraduate lines, each with the other conditions its catalog sets. Your college or program may set its own, higher lines.

Published GPA lines at UVA
GPA lineWhat it meansAlso required
Below 1.800 (Arts & Sciences) or 2.000 (Engineering) in a fall or spring semesterAcademic warning, depending on the schoolEach school sets its own standards. In Arts & Sciences, full-time students also need at least 12 earned credits and no more than one final grade of C− or below that semester; part-time students need a 1.800. Engineering also flags two failing grades in a required course. Full rule
3.500 (Arts & Sciences) or 3.400 (Engineering) in a semesterDean’s List, depending on the schoolAt least 15 credits of graded coursework, and CR/NC courses don’t count toward them. Any F, NC or NG that semester rules it out (Arts & Sciences also names U). Each school sets its own GPA minimum. Full rule
3.400 cumulative or higherGraduating with distinction, depending on the schoolEach school sets its own rules. In Arts & Sciences, 3.400 qualifies only with a recommendation after completing a Distinguished Majors Program, which requires a thesis; without one, a 3.600 earns “with distinction” only. In Engineering, 3.400 earns distinction, 3.600 high distinction and 3.800 highest distinction. Full rule
2.000The minimum GPA for a UVA degreeMeasured on the courses required for graduation. Full rule

To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.

A worked example

A retaken D or F can drop out of the GPA. A D in a 3-credit course, retaken for a B, and an A in another 3-credit course: only the higher grade counts, (3.0 × 3 + 4.0 × 3) ÷ 6 = 3.50. Had both attempts counted, the GPA would be 2.67. This covers only the first 9 repeated credits.

The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your UVA academic record.
