The University of Kentucky’s GPA uses whole letter grades: A is 4, B 3, C 2, D 1 and E 0, with no plus or minus. E, not F, is the failing grade that counts; an F from a pass/fail course stays out of your GPA. A retake replaces the old grade only if you use one of your four repeat options.
UKY’s points: A 4.00, B 3.00, C 2.00, D 1.00 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows UKY’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at the University of Kentucky
The University of Kentucky multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at the University of Kentucky
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

Code
What it means
In the University of Kentucky GPA
E
Failing grade in a letter-graded course
Counts as 0 points, and its hours count in your GPA, though you earn no credit. To get credit you retake the whole course or pass a special exam. The Grading policy stops issuing E grades from fall 2027. Rule
P or F
Pass or Fail, in a course you take pass/fail
Left out of your GPA, even an F. A P earns credit toward graduation. You can take up to four elective courses pass/fail once you’re past the freshman level and not on probation (courses offered only pass/fail don’t count toward the four). You can switch between pass/fail and a letter grade in the first three weeks of a fall or spring semester. Rule
W
Withdrew from a class, including an approved hardship withdrawal after the deadline
Incomplete: part of the course’s work is still undone
Left out of your GPA while it stands. You must finish within 12 months of the end of the term, or before you graduate if that comes first; your instructor can extend this by up to 12 more months. If it isn’t replaced in time, it becomes an E and your GPA is recalculated. Rule
XE or XF
Failure in a course because of an academic offense (XF in a pass/fail course)
An XE is worth 0 points, the same value as an E. The repeat option can’t replace an XE or XF, and you can’t get a retroactive withdrawal from the class. Rule
AU
Audit: you attend without credit or a grade
Left out of your GPA: 0 points and 0 hours. Switch between audit and credit in the first three weeks of a fall or spring semester. Attend at least 80 percent of classes, or your instructor can ask the dean for a W. Rule
Repeated course
You took the same course again
A retake doesn’t replace the old grade on its own. Without the repeat option, every attempt counts in your GPA. To use it, talk with your advisor and file the registrar’s repeat option request before the end of the term you graduate. Then only the highest grade among your completed attempts counts; the others stay on your transcript. You get four courses for your whole undergraduate career (your college dean can grant exceptions), and the retake must be at UK. It can’t replace an XE or XF, can’t swap a letter grade for a pass/fail one, and can’t reach a course taken before a degree you’ve already earned. A failed retake after a passing attempt stays out of your GPA once you’ve earned the credit. If you retake a course you passed with a B or better and don’t use the repeat option, the later B-or-better grade is ignored. The registrar’s Repeat Option page still describes the second attempt replacing the first; the 2026–2027 catalog and the Grading policy in effect since August 2026 count the highest grade. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Transfer grades never count in your UK GPA, which starts with your first term at UK. A transfer course needs at least a D− to be accepted, and your college may ask for more. AP, CLEP and bypass credit shows as CR: it counts toward graduation but not your GPA. Admission still counts every transfer grade, even one your old school dropped after a retake. Rule

What it means
Also required
Below 2.0 cumulative GPA, or two terms in a row below 2.0
Academic probation
Raising your cumulative GPA to 2.0 ends probation. After two low terms, you need a 2.0 term GPA and a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Summer counts like fall and spring. On probation you can take at most 15 hours a semester unless your dean waives it, and no pass/fail courses. Colleges can add their own probation rules. Full rule
Below 2.0 term GPA while on probation
Academic suspension
You’re also suspended for a cumulative GPA below 2.0 three UK terms in a row, or below 0.6 after your first term on at least 9 hours of A–E grades. Your dean can keep you on probation instead. You sit out at least one term (summer and winter don’t count) before your dean can reinstate you. After a second suspension, readmission happens only in unusual circumstances. Full rule
3.6 semester GPA or higher (Arts and Sciences)
Dean’s List
At least 12 earned hours of graded coursework that semester; pass/fail hours don’t count toward the 12. Full rule
3.40 or higher cumulative UK GPA at graduation
Latin honors: cum laude 3.40 to 3.59, magna cum laude 3.60 to 3.79, summa cum laude 3.80 and up
You need at least 90 quality hours at UK. With 60 to 89 UK hours, each cutoff is 0.20 higher and your transcript shows University Honors. Work at a Kentucky community or technical college doesn’t count toward the honors GPA. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
A pass/fail F doesn’t touch your GPA, but a letter-graded E does. Take a 3-hour A, a 4-hour B, a 3-hour E, and a 3-hour pass/fail course you fail: (4 × 3 + 3 × 4 + 0 × 3) ÷ 10 = 2.40, because the F’s 3 hours stay out. Had that last course been letter-graded, its E would count too: (4 × 3 + 3 × 4 + 0 × 6) ÷ 13 = 1.85.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your University of Kentucky academic record.
