At Iowa an A+ is worth 4.33 per semester hour, A 4.00, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33, B 3.00, B− 2.67, C+ 2.33, C 2.00, C− 1.67, D+ 1.33, D 1.00, D− 0.67 and F 0, though an instructor may grade on plain A to F instead. The F is the only grade worth zero, and an incomplete you don’t finish by the deadline turns into one. AUS, AUU, IP, N, P, S and U grades and I, O, R and W marks stay out of your GPA. If you retake a course, both grades count until you file the second-grade-only option, which drops the first grade from your GPA in up to three courses in CLAS.
Iowa’s points: A+ 4.33, A 4.00, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows Iowa’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at the University of Iowa
The University of Iowa multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at the University of Iowa
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.
How the University of Iowa counts each code
Code
What it means
In the University of Iowa GPA
F
Failing
Counts 0 in your GPA and earns no credit toward graduation. In an S/F course the F counts in your GPA even though an S or U would not. An incomplete you don’t finish in time automatically becomes an F (or U). Rule
I
Incomplete
Stays out of your GPA, and you can get one only if you’ve finished most of the work and your standing in the course is satisfactory. Finish before the close of the following semester or it automatically becomes an F (or U); Engineering puts the deadline at the end of the next fall or spring semester, summer and winter excluded. You can’t graduate with an I or retake a course to clear one, but an I that has lapsed to F can be retaken with the second-grade-only option. Rule
P / N
Pass / Nonpass
Out of your GPA. A P means C− or higher and counts toward graduation; an N means D+ or lower and doesn’t. In CLAS you can take P/N only in electives, never for major, minor or certificate requirements, and the degree accepts at most 15 s.h. of UI P credit and 30 s.h. of P and S from all sources. P/N hours also don’t count as graded hours for the Dean’s List. Rule
S / U
Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory
Neither counts in your GPA. S hours count toward graduation; U hours don’t. Rule
W
Withdrawn
Out of your GPA. You get a W for a course dropped after the drop-without-W deadline, and in zero-credit courses a W marks unsatisfactory work (R marks satisfactory). Withdrawing from a whole semester leaves no courses, credits or grades on your transcript. For financial aid, W hours count as attempted. Rule
AUS / AUU
Audit successful / unsuccessful
What you get for auditing a course. Neither counts in your GPA. Rule
O
No grade reported
Shows up when an instructor fails to report your grade. It stays out of your GPA, but an O that term keeps you off the Dean’s List. Rule
IP, R
In progress; registered
Neither counts in your GPA. R is the satisfactory grade in a zero-credit course. Rule
#
Grade not included in GPA (second-grade-only option)
Marks the first grade of a course you retook under the second-grade-only option. The grade stays visible but no longer counts. Rule
Repeated course
You took the same course again
Retaking a course doesn’t replace anything by itself. Both grades count in your GPA (a duplicated course earns no extra degree credit) until you request the second-grade-only option (SGO). Then both grades stay on your record, marked #, but only the second counts in your GPA and hours earned. CLAS allows the SGO once per course and for three courses in total, whatever your first grade was, but only when both attempts were Iowa courses taken for an A–F letter grade or S/F. Once it’s on your record you can’t take it back. Graduate programs may still count the first grade. Restart, Iowa’s academic forgiveness policy, can remove whole earlier CLAS semesters from your GPA after an absence of four or more consecutive years. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Transfer grades count in a separate transfer GPA, not in your UI GPA. Iowa builds on your transfer GPA rather than starting fresh, and every transfer grade goes into it, D’s and F’s included. Career-technical grades are left out, and if you repeated a course at the same school, the first grade is left out of your transfer GPA. CLAS keeps a UI cumulative GPA and a transfer GPA, plus an overall cumulative GPA that combines them. Good standing, graduation and distinction check both the UI and overall figures. Only 60 s.h. from two-year colleges count toward the 120 for graduation, but grades beyond that still count in your GPAs. You can’t use the second-grade-only option to retake a transfer course at Iowa or an Iowa course somewhere else. For financial aid, transfer credit stays out of the GPA unless you have no completed Iowa credits. Rule

What it means
Also required
1.85 UI and overall cumulative (0–29 earned hours)
CLAS good standing
Both the UI and overall cumulative GPAs must meet it, and so must a 1.50 UI term GPA. Miss any one and you’re on academic probation. Full rule
Applies to any spring, summer or fall enrollment. Incompletes aren’t used in calculating it. Full rule
2.00 UI term GPA while on probation
Avoiding dismissal from CLAS
Applies in a fall or spring semester on probation; reaching good standing also works. Records are reviewed after fall and spring only. If you get incompletes in every course while on probation, you’re subject to dismissal. Full rule
2.00 UI cumulative and UI term
College of Engineering good standing
If either one falls below 2.00, you’re on probation. Full rule
2.00 in four GPAs
CLAS graduation minimum
You need it in all college work, all UI work, all major work and all UI major work. The BFA in Dance requires 3.50 in the major. Full rule
3.50 term GPA, 12 UI graded hours
Dean’s List
That’s 3.50 on 12 or more semester hours of UI graded work, with no I or O marks that term. The registrar’s Dean’s List page, which covers CLAS, Education, Engineering, Public Health, Tippie, University College and Medicine undergraduates, writes it as 3.5. Full rule
4.00 for two consecutive semesters
President’s List
Each semester needs 12 or more UI graded hours and no I or O marks. Summer sessions don’t count. Full rule
3.95 or above
Graduate with highest distinction
Since fall 2024, distinction rules are the same in every undergraduate college. Both your UI cumulative and overall cumulative GPAs count, as they stand before your final semester. You need 60 s.h. in residence, with at least 45 graded hours done before the final semester. Full rule
F, N, U, W, O and I hours count as attempted. Courses removed from the GPA by the second-grade-only option still count toward pace. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
At Iowa a retake only helps once you ask for it. Say you earn an A, a B+ and a C in three 3-s.h. courses and a D in a 4-s.h. chemistry course, then retake chemistry and earn a B. Until you request the second-grade-only option, both chemistry grades count: (4.00 × 3 + 3.33 × 3 + 2.00 × 3 + 1.00 × 4 + 3.00 × 4) ÷ 17 = 43.99 ÷ 17 ≈ 2.59. Once you file the SGO, the D stays on your transcript marked # but drops out of the math: (12.00 + 9.99 + 6.00 + 12.00) ÷ 13 = 39.99 ÷ 13 ≈ 3.08. CLAS gives you three SGOs for your whole time as an undergraduate.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your University of Iowa academic record.
For any other college, the college GPA calculator starts on the common plus/minus 4.0 points and takes your school’s own. Cumulative GPA combines terms you already have, and the GPA guide answers what a GPA means.
