UH’s GPA divides grade points by the hours you took for a letter grade: A is 4.00, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33 and so on down to F at 0.00. W, S, U, I, IP, NR and credit by exam (CR) stay out of it.
UH’s points: A 4.00, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33, B 3.00 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows UH’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at UH
UH multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at UH
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.
Satisfactory or unsatisfactory, in certain specified courses
Left out of the GPA. S earns credit; U does not. Rule
I
Incomplete
Left out of the GPA, but turns into an F if the work is not finished in the time allowed (one year at most). When UH checks the grade requirements for a degree, every I counts as an F. Rule
NR
Grade not reported by the instructor
Left out of the GPA, but turns into an F (or U) 90 days after the term closes. Rule
IP
In progress, for a Senior Honors thesis
Left out of the GPA until the letter grade is posted. Rule
CR or NCR
Credit by exam, or no credit (spring 2020 to spring 2021 only)
A retaken course counts as a new course, so both grades stay in the GPA, except that a D+ or lower earned in your first 12 months at UH can be left out if you retake the course at UH within 12 months (once per course, at most three courses, only one at the 3000 level and none at the 4000 or 5000 level; not for a grade that came from an academic honesty violation). Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Grades from other schools don’t transfer: the UH GPA is built only on work done at UH. Rule
UH cuts the GPA to two decimals instead of rounding: 3.499 counts as 3.49.
UH GPA lines
These are UH’s published undergraduate lines, each with the other conditions its catalog sets. Your college or program may set its own, higher lines.

What it means
Also required
Below 2.00 cumulative
Academic probation; first-time-in-college students who fall below 2.00 in their first fall or spring term get academic warning instead
On probation, a term GPA below 2.00 leads to suspension. Probation ends once both your term and cumulative GPAs are 2.00 or higher. Colleges may set stricter rules. A 2.00 cumulative GPA is also the minimum to graduate. Full rule
At least 3.50 in a term
Dean’s List
At least 9 semester hours completed that term, or 12 in the Colleges of Architecture, Business, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics. S grades don’t count in the GPA. Any I (except in a senior honors thesis course), D, F or U that term rules you out, and some colleges add their own requirements. Full rule
3.50 or higher in your last 54 hours at UH
Graduation with honors: cum laude 3.50–3.69, magna cum laude 3.70–3.89, summa cum laude 3.90–4.0
You need at least 54 hours at UH. Only letter-graded UH hours count toward the 54; S, U, I and W hours don’t. The calculation also takes in every hour of the term in which the first of those 54 hours was completed. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
A retake usually keeps both grades. An F in a 3-hour course retaken for a B, plus a 3-hour A: (0 × 3 + 3.00 × 3 + 4.00 × 3) ÷ 9 = 2.33. If the F came in your first 12 months at UH and you retook the course at UH within 12 months, the first-year grade exclusion leaves the F out and the GPA is 3.50.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your UH academic record.
For any other college, the college GPA calculator starts on the common plus/minus 4.0 points and takes your school’s own. Cumulative GPA combines terms you already have, and the GPA guide answers what a GPA means.
