UC Davis grade points run A+ 4.000, A 4.000, A− 3.700, B+ 3.300, B 3.000, B− 2.700, C+ 2.300, C 2.000, C− 1.700, D+ 1.300, D 1.000, D− 0.700 and F 0.000, earned for every unit of the course, and your GPA is total grade points ÷ attempted UC units. An A+ marks extraordinary work but earns nothing extra. P, NP, S, U, IP, NG, Y and I stay out of the GPA, though an I still open at graduation is counted as a not-passing grade. Grades from non-UC colleges never enter your UC GPA. If you retake a D or F, only the newest grade counts for your first 16 repeated units; after that, every grade counts.
UC Davis’s points: A+ 4.00, A 4.00, A− 3.70, B+ 3.30 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same units again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future units beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows UC Davis’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at UC Davis
UC Davis multiplies each course’s grade points by its units, adds them up and divides by the units that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at UC Davis
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no units. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

Code
What it means
In the UC Davis GPA
A+
Extraordinary achievement
Worth 4.000 per unit, exactly the same as an A, so it earns nothing extra. Rule
F
Not passing
Counts 0.000 in your GPA; the catalog calls it work so poor it must be repeated to receive recognition. If you’re registered and never attend or submit any work, you get a failing grade. An F you retake is replaced in your GPA within the 16-unit repeat limit. Rule
D+, D, D−
Barely passing
Worth 1.300, 1.000 and 0.700 per unit. These are the grades (with F and NP) that let you repeat a course; a C− or better doesn’t (except a C− in an Entry Level Writing course), and the registrar won’t lower a grade to make a course repeatable. Taken P/NP, work at D+ or lower earns NP. Rule
P / NP
Passed / Not Passed
Stays out of your GPA, but P units count toward your degree. You must be in good academic standing, and the deadline is the 40th day of instruction. Davis awards a P for C− work or better; the UC-wide Senate regulation printed in the same section says C or better. No more than one-third of your Davis units may be P/NP (one-fourth for P grades in Letters & Science), and Biological Sciences requires major courses to be letter-graded unless a course is offered only P/NP. Rule
I
Incomplete
Given when your work is passing but unfinished for good cause. It isn’t in your GPA at the end of the term, but it has to be replaced by the end of the third succeeding quarter (summers excluded) or it turns into an F, NP or U. Any I still open at graduation is calculated as not passing, and for the 2.000 graduation check incomplete letter-graded units count as zero. More than 16 units of incompletes can bring academic notice or disqualification. You can’t re-enroll in a course while its I is unresolved. Rule
NG
No grade reported yet
Shown until the instructor submits your grade. It stays out of the GPA, but if it isn’t replaced by the end of the next quarter (summers excluded), it becomes an F, NP or U. Rule
IP
In progress
Used in courses that run over more than one term; it’s replaced by the final grade when the sequence is done and is not counted in the GPA. Rule
Y
Pending judicial action
Shown while a student conduct matter is pending; it carries no grade points and is left out of the GPA. Rule
S / U
Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory
A grading option for graduate students: an S needs B− work in a graduate course or C− work in an undergraduate course, and S/U units are not counted in the GPA. Rule
W01–W09, WA, WB
Course dropped (week shown)
Listed among the cancellation and withdrawal notations, not as a grade; the GPA averages only completed letter-graded courses. The drop deadline is the 20th day of instruction (the 10th for courses marked with a ten-day deadline). For financial aid, withdrawals generally don’t count as units attempted. Rule
Repeated course
You took the same course again
You may repeat a course only if you got a D+ or lower or an NP (a C− or lower in an Entry Level Writing course), or if an I became permanent. For the first 16 units you repeat, only the most recent grade counts and the earlier attempt’s units leave your attempted total; after 16 units, or for a course that partly crosses the limit, every grade counts. The regulation’s GPA clause speaks of courses where you received a D or F. Every grade stays on your transcript, you get degree credit only once, a letter-graded course can’t be retaken P/NP, and taking a course a third time needs your dean’s office’s approval. Repeating a course you passed earns no credit, and a department may block a repeat if you already passed a course it leads to with a C− or better. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Your UC GPA is computed on courses taken at any University of California campus and through UC Davis Extension; Open Campus grade points count once you’re admitted or readmitted as a regular student, but Extension courses from other UC campuses don’t. Credit from non-UC colleges adds to your total units but never enters your UC GPA, while transfer credit from another UC campus counts in it. A transferable course with no UC Davis equivalent posts as elective credit, TR. Undergraduate Admissions decides transferability for incoming students, the Registrar for continuing ones. Letters & Science and Agricultural & Environmental Sciences compute major GPAs on UC Davis courses only, and the Graduate School of Management’s depth GPA does the same. Rule

A worked example
UC Davis replaces a retaken D or F, but only for your first 16 repeated units. Say you take three 4-unit courses and earn an F, an A− and a B: (0 × 4 + 3.7 × 4 + 3.0 × 4) ÷ 12 = 26.8 ÷ 12 = 2.23. You retake the failed course (for a letter grade, since it was letter-graded) and earn a B−. Within your first 16 repeated units the F drops out of the GPA along with its units: (2.7 × 4 + 3.7 × 4 + 3.0 × 4) ÷ 12 = 37.6 ÷ 12 = 3.13. Past the 16-unit limit, both attempts count: (0 + 10.8 + 14.8 + 12.0) ÷ 16 = 37.6 ÷ 16 = 2.35. Either way the F stays on your transcript and the course’s units count toward your degree only once.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your UC Davis academic record.
For any other college, the college GPA calculator starts on the common plus/minus 4.0 points and takes your school’s own. Cumulative GPA combines terms you already have, and the GPA guide answers what a GPA means.
