Purdue’s GPA weights each grade by its semester hours: A+ and A are both 4, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3 and so on down to D− 0.7, with E, F and IF at 0.0. P, N, W, WF, WN, WU, I, PI, SI, IN, IU, AU and NS stay out of it.
Purdue’s points: A+ 4.00, A 4.00, A− 3.70, B+ 3.30 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows Purdue’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at Purdue
Purdue multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.
What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at Purdue
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

Code
What it means
In the Purdue GPA
W
Withdrew from a course dropped after week 2 and before the end of week 13
Left out of the GPA. You can’t drop a course in the last three weeks of a semester. Rule
P or N
Pass (C− or better) or not pass, under the pass/not-pass option
Left out of the GPA. You can use the option for at most 20 percent of the credit hours your degree needs, and your school decides when a P course meets its requirements. Rule
I, PI or SI
Incomplete (regular grade, pass/not-pass, or zero-credit course)
Left out of the GPA. If you don’t finish within one year, an I becomes IF, which counts as an F; PI becomes IN and SI becomes IU, which stay out of the GPA. Rule
E
Conditional failure: you missed the course goals by little enough to make up the credit without retaking the whole course
Counts as 0.0, like an F. If you meet the extra requirements in time it becomes a D (never higher), and the D replaces the E in later GPAs. Rule
With your advisor’s guidance you can take a non-repeatable course up to three times. Only the most recent grade counts in the cumulative GPA, even if it’s lower, as long as you retake the same course (or an approved equivalent) in the same grade mode. Retaking the course at another school can’t remove the Purdue grade from your GPA. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Only the credit transfers; grades from other schools don’t come into the Purdue GPA. A course needs a C− or better to transfer, and transfer credit can’t remove a Purdue grade from the GPA. Rule

Below 2.0 semester or overall
Academic notice, at the end of any fall or spring semester
Notice ends after a fall or spring semester with both semester and overall GPAs of 2.0 or more. A student on notice whose semester and overall GPA are both below 2.0 is separated from the University. Standing isn’t checked after summer sessions. A 2.00 cumulative GPA is also the minimum to graduate. Full rule
3.5 overall and 3.0 in the semester
Dean’s List
At least 12 hours in the overall GPA and at least 6 hours in the semester GPA. Full rule
3.5 or higher in a semester
Semester Honors
At least six credit hours in the semester GPA and at least a 2.0 overall GPA. Full rule
Your school’s 90th percentile, and at least 3.30, overall
Graduation with distinction; the top three-tenths of the spring graduates who qualify graduate with highest distinction
You need at least 60 hours of Purdue credit in the overall GPA. The cutoff is set from each school’s spring graduates and also applies that summer and fall; all engineering bachelor’s graduates count as one school. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
Only the most recent attempt counts, even when it’s lower. A B in a 3-credit course, retaken for a C, and an A in another 3-credit course: the B drops out, so (2.00 × 3 + 4.00 × 3) ÷ 6 = 3.00. Keeping the B instead would have given 3.50.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your Purdue academic record.
