Percentage to CGPA calculator

To turn a percentage into a CGPA, reverse the formula your board or university publishes. Under CBSE’s rule, divide by 9.5, so 76% is a CGPA of 8. Under Anna University’s, divide by 10; under VTU’s 2015 to 2018 schemes, divide by 10 and add 0.75.

What the answer is, and what it is not

The result is the CGPA that your university’s formula pairs with that percentage. It is not a grade anyone awarded you: a CGPA is built from the grade points of each course, weighted by credits, so the one on your grade card can differ from a converted figure.

The reverse conversion is most useful for comparing yourself with a cutoff written the other way, such as a job or course that asks for “60% or a CGPA of 6.5”. For a form that asks for your CGPA, give the one on your grade card.

One percentage under each rule

76% is a CGPA of 8 under CBSE’s rule (76 ÷ 9.5), 7.6 under Anna University’s (76 ÷ 10), 8.35 under VTU’s (76 ÷ 10 + 0.75), 8.1 under JNTUH’s (76 ÷ 10 + 0.5) and 8.54 under SPPU’s (76 ÷ 8.9, rounded).

The same arithmetic turns a semester’s percentage into an SGPA. To go the usual way, from a CGPA to a percentage, use the CGPA to percentage calculator.

Which formula is yours?

  • CBSE Class 10 (results with a CGPA): % ÷ 9.5For CBSE Class 10 results that show a CGPA, under the grading scheme CBSE introduced in 2010.
  • VTU (2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes): % ÷ 10 + 0.75For Visvesvaraya Technological University’s 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes only.
  • Anna University (B.E./B.Tech., Regulations 2021 and 2025): % ÷ 10For B.E. and B.Tech. students of Anna University’s non-autonomous affiliated colleges under Regulations 2021 and 2025.
  • JNTU Hyderabad (B.Tech. R22): % ÷ 10 + 0.5For JNTU Hyderabad B.Tech. regular students of non-autonomous colleges under the R22 regulations (from 2022–23).
  • Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU): % ÷ 8.9For Savitribai Phule Pune University, from the conversion sheet on its examination website.

If your university is not listed, its regulations or the back of your grade card usually give its CGPA-to-percentage formula; reverse that.

A percentage or CGPA for applications abroad

Universities outside India read an Indian percentage or CGPA by their own rules, and many ask for your marksheets rather than a converted number. A US-style 4.0 GPA is a different scale altogether: the GPA scale explains how it works, but the university you apply to decides how your marks map onto it.
