Alabama gives 4.33 points for an A+, 4.0 for an A, 3.67 for an A−, 3.33 for a B+, 3.0 for a B, 2.67 for a B−, 2.33 for a C+, 2.0 for a C, 1.67 for a C−, 1.33 for a D+, 1.0 for a D, 0.67 for a D− and 0 for an F. Still, a cumulative GPA can’t go above 4.0. An F counts as zero whatever the reason, and so does an N (no grade reported). P, W, NC and NA stay out. The grades page leaves IN out too, but the academic standing page counts it as an F until it’s replaced. A retake never replaces a grade: every attempt stays in your GPA, and only the last one counts in earned hours. Transfer grades count in your overall GPA but not your UA GPA.
Alabama’s points: A+ 4.33, A 4.00, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows Alabama’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at Alabama
Alabama multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at Alabama
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.
How Alabama counts each code
Code
What it means
In the Alabama GPA
A+
Top grade
Worth 4.33 points, so it can lift a lower grade in the same term. The catalog adds that a cumulative GPA of 4.0 is the highest an undergraduate can get, so straight A+ grades still leave you at 4.0. Rule
F
Failure
Worth 0 points and counts in your GPA whatever the reason it was given, not attending included. An F can’t carry a plus or minus. An F in a pass/fail course counts too. If you fail a required course, you must repeat it and pass, and the F stays in your GPA. Rule
N
No Grade Reported
The catalog lists N as no grade reported. The registrar’s page says you get an N in any course whose grade comes in late, and an N is calculated as an F in your GPA. Rule
FN, FS
Failing for non-attendance (never attended, stopped attending)
Before the last day to drop with a W, these show only as midterm grades in myBama, not on your transcript, and you can still drop with a W. After that day they become an F (or an NC in a course graded that way) on your transcript. NN and NS are the matching non-attendance codes that become NC. Rule
IN
Incomplete
The catalog’s grades page and the registrar both say an IN doesn’t count in your GPA. The catalog’s academic standing page instead says an I counts as an F until the earned grade replaces it. Either way, an IN not resolved by the end of the next regular semester, whether you’re enrolled or not, turns into an F. Rule
P
Pass (pass/fail option)
A P doesn’t affect your GPA, but an F under pass/fail does. You must be a sophomore, junior or senior with at least a 2.0 GPA, and transfer students first need 15 UA hours at 2.0 or better. You can take up to four courses or 12 hours pass/fail in all. Rule
NC
No Credit
Used only in freshman composition and introductory math courses, where the grades run from A+ to C−, then NC. An NC stays out of your GPA, and you need a C− or better to move on to higher English and math courses. Rule
W
Withdrawn
Stays out of your GPA. Dropping during the change-of-schedule period leaves no record. After that, a drop through the tenth week of a fall or spring semester shows as a W. Withdrawing from the whole semester after that period gives a W in every course. Approved academic bankruptcy turns every grade from one past term into a W. Rule
NA
A code the catalog lists but doesn’t define
The catalog lists NA with the grades that are not used in computing the GPA, but its grade table doesn’t define it. Rule
AU
Audit
You take the class without a grade or credit for it. Rule
IP, NG
In Progress; Non-Graded Class
Both are in the catalog’s grade table but aren’t among the A to F grades the GPA is computed on. Rule
Repeated course
You took the same course again
Under the catalog’s Repeat Course Policy, the grade and credit of your most recent attempt count in your GPA and earned hours, and every earlier attempt still counts in your GPA, just not in earned hours. So a retake never removes an old grade from your GPA. In some divisions you can repeat a course you already passed, with the dean’s permission; each enrollment counts in your GPA, but only the final one applies to your degree. If you repeated a course you took elsewhere, every grade counts in your overall GPA. Federal rules limit how many times financial aid pays for a repeat. Your major or minor GPA is different: it leaves failed and repeated attempts out. Two policies do take old UA grades out of your GPA: Academic Second Opportunity, after at least three academic years away, and academic bankruptcy for one term. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Every transferable course posts to your UA transcript with the grade from the other school, and you can’t pick which courses to transfer. Those grades, F’s included, count in your overall GPA but not in your UA GPA, which covers only UA work. If you repeated a course, every attempt posts and every grade counts in your overall GPA. Courses another school removed through clemency, bankruptcy or forgiveness don’t post at all. Credit from an international school posts as pass/fail, where an F still counts. A D− or better may apply to your degree unless a C− is required. To transfer in, you need at least a 2.0 on all college work. Rule
Alabama divides your total quality points by your total GPA hours and rounds to the third decimal. The catalog’s sample: 32.67 ÷ 16 = 2.042. The calculator shows two decimals.

A worked example
Alabama never replaces a grade, and transfer grades count in only one of your two GPAs. Say you fail a 3-hour course at a community college. You then take its UA equivalent and earn an A, along with a 3-hour B+ and a 4-hour A− at UA. Both attempts post. Your overall GPA counts all 13 GPA hours: (0 × 3 + 4.0 × 3 + 3.33 × 3 + 3.67 × 4) ÷ 13 = 36.67 ÷ 13 = 2.821, or 2.82. Your UA GPA leaves the transfer F out: 36.67 ÷ 10 = 3.667. That UA GPA sets your academic standing, merit scholarships and Latin honors. You need a 2.0 in both to graduate. Had you failed the course at UA instead, the F would sit in both GPAs, and your UA GPA would also be 2.821.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your Alabama academic record.
For any other college, the college GPA calculator starts on the common plus/minus 4.0 points and takes your school’s own. Cumulative GPA combines terms you already have, and the GPA guide answers what a GPA means.
