U of A GPA calculator

The U of A grades on whole letters: A is 4, B 3, C 2, D 1, and both F and XF (failure for academic dishonesty) are 0; only the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design adds pluses and minuses. A retake doesn’t replace your first grade: every attempt counts in your GPA unless you use grade exclusion, which takes up to four D or F courses out for good. A pass-fail F still counts as 0, and the Dean’s List needs a 3.75 semester GPA.

U of A’s points: A 4.00, B 3.00, C 2.00, D 1.00 and so on.

Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?

These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.

Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?

Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows U of A’s.

One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?

Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.

Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)
Course groups and equal weights

Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.

Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet

Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Save my courses or compare versions

Nothing is sent to us. Untick the box to forget them.

To compare plans, save the courses as they are now as a version, change them, and save again. Versions stay in this browser until you delete them.

Open a file you saved with “Save the versions to a file”, in this browser or another. It is read in your browser and sent nowhere.

Grade points at the U of A

The U of A multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at the U of A

A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

How the U of A counts each code
CodeWhat it meansIn the U of A GPA
WWithdrawal: you withdrew from the course after the first 10 days of the semesterLeft out of your GPA, and W hours don’t count as hours attempted for probation. A course you drop by the 10th day of class in a fall or spring term doesn’t appear on your transcript at all. After that you can withdraw through the last day of class, the day before Reading Day, and the course stays on your transcript with a W. A W counts as an attempt under the course repeat policy. Rule
XFFailure for academic dishonestyCounts as 0, like an F, and earns no credit. After you graduate or finish a suspension, you can ask the Provost in writing to remove the X from your transcript. Rule
IIncomplete: a legitimate circumstance kept you from finishing, and your work so far is passingLeft out of your GPA while it stands. Finish the work within 12 months after the end of the term, or the I changes to an F, which counts as 0. Rule
P or F (pass-fail)You chose pass-fail: a C-minus or above earns a PA P earns hours but stays out of your GPA; an F counts as 0. Only Fulbright, Fay Jones and Bumpers students can choose it (Education and Health Professions students only in Fulbright or COEHP courses); Walton and Engineering students can’t. You need sophomore rank, a 2.00 cumulative GPA and no probation; one course a semester, 18 hours in all, general electives only (no major, minor or State Minimum Core courses). Sign up before the last day to add a course; the grade can’t be changed later. P hours don’t count toward the 12 letter-graded hours for the Dean’s List. Rule
PD or NCPassing with a D, or No Credit: offered only in extenuating circumstances, such as spring and summer 2020Neither touches your GPA. A PD earns credit hours; an NC doesn’t. Any PD or NC in a semester keeps you off that semester’s Dean’s and Chancellor’s Lists. Rule
AUAudit: you’re officially registered to attend without creditLeft out of your GPA. You pay tuition and fees, seats are space-available, and AU is the only mark you can get. Rule
CRCredit without grade points: for example practice teaching, certain seminars and honors colloquia, and credit by examinationCounts toward your degree but not your GPA. Credit by examination, including AP, CLEP and IB, is recorded this way, with no grade. Rule
RRegistered, no credit: you’re registered for the course without credit or grade points, typically for study abroadNo credit and no grade points; left out of your GPA. Rule
SSatisfactory: used in courses such as special problems and research when a final grade is inappropriateLeft out of your GPA. Rule
A− to D− (Fay Jones School only)Plus and minus grades in architecture, interior design and landscape architecture coursesThese courses use 12 steps: A 4.00, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33, B 3.00, B− 2.67, C+ 2.33, C 2.00, C− 1.67, D+ 1.33, D 1.00, D− 0.67 and F 0.00. Every other course uses whole letters, as this calculator does. Rule
Repeated courseYou took the same course againA retake doesn’t replace your first grade: every attempt stays on your transcript and counts in your GPA, though a course counts only once toward your 120 hours unless it’s listed as repeatable for credit. You can repeat a course once (two enrollments). A third attempt needs a student success consultation first, and a fourth needs a petition to the Academic Standards Committee; a W or a grade exclusion counts as an attempt. To take a D or F out of your GPA, petition the Office of the Registrar for grade exclusion before you graduate: up to four U of A courses, with a lab from the same semester counting as part of its course. Once posted, an exclusion can’t be undone or moved. The course stays on your transcript, marked (E); it can’t meet a degree requirement, and a D in it stops counting toward your degree. It still counts for financial aid progress, doesn’t change past semester honors, and isn’t accepted for first-ranked senior scholar, and many graduate schools and employers recount every course. Courses approved for the old grade forgiveness count toward the four. The catalog and the registrar’s Grade Exclusion Policy page say four courses; the registrar’s Grades page and Transcript Guide still say 9 credit hours. Rule
Transfer creditGrades from another collegeGrades from other schools never enter your U of A GPA, which counts only U of A Fayetteville courses at your level; accepted transfer work shows on your transcript as a summary. Transfer credit generally needs a C or better. With a 2.00 GPA you can petition to transfer up to six hours of D grades that meet core or elective requirements, but not courses in your major. C-or-better State Minimum Core courses from Arkansas public schools apply to your degree. Credit by exam, including AP, CLEP and IB, is recorded as CR with no grade. If you return after five or more years away, academic bankruptcy forfeits all your earlier credit and starts your GPA over. Rule

2.00Good status; below it, with more than three hours attempted, you’re on academic probationYour status is set at the end of every fall, spring and summer term. A worked example

A retake never replaces a failing grade: both attempts count until you use grade exclusion, which takes a D or F out of your GPA for good (four courses at most). Say you fail a 3-credit course, retake it for a B, and also earn a 3-credit A and a 3-credit C. Both attempts count: (0.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 3 + 4.0 × 3 + 2.0 × 3) ÷ 12 = 2.25. After you exclude the F: (3.0 × 3 + 4.0 × 3 + 2.0 × 3) ÷ 9 = 3.00.

The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your U of A academic record.
