Oregon State GPA calculator

Oregon State counts an A as 4.0, an A− as 3.7, a B+ as 3.3 and so on down to D− 0.7 and F 0, and there’s no A+. Only an F counts as zero, and you get one if you stop going to a class without dropping or withdrawing; W, I, S/U, P/N and audit marks stay out of your GPA. Retake an OSU course and only your second attempt counts in your GPA, even if it’s lower, though both grades stay on your record.

Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?

These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.

Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?

Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows Oregon State’s.

One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?

Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.

Course groups and equal weights

Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.

Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet

Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at Oregon State

A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

How Oregon State counts each code
CodeWhat it meansIn the Oregon State GPA
AThe top grade: exceptional accomplishmentCounts 4.0. AR 17’s twelve basic grades run from A to F with pluses and minuses and don’t include an A+, so no grade counts more than 4.0. Every grade from A to F counts in your GPA with the credits you took it for. Rule
FFailureCounts 0 points, and its credits still count, so it pulls your GPA down; it earns no credits. You can drop a class with no grade only through the end of the first full week. If you don’t drop a class properly, an F is recorded. AR 17’s list of marks has no separate code for stopping attendance. Rule
I (I/alternate grade)Incomplete: part of the work isn’t done, for reasons your instructor accepts, while the rest of your work is passingStays out of your credits and your GPA while it’s unresolved. Your instructor also enters an alternate grade (shown like I/B or I/F), the grade you’ll get if you don’t finish. You have up to one calendar year, ending sooner at degree conferral; if you don’t finish, the I turns into the alternate grade and that grade counts in your GPA. You can petition for extensions one term at a time, three at most. When you apply to graduate, an outstanding I is treated as its alternate grade, which can keep you from graduating. Don’t re-enroll in the course while you have an I in it. Rule
WWithdrawal: you left a class after the drop deadlineDoesn’t affect your GPA and earns no credits. You can withdraw from a class after the first full week through the end of the seventh full week; after that, you finish your classes and get grades unless you withdraw from the whole term. Withdrawing from the term before finals week (by Friday of week 10) gives you a W in every class. You can withdraw from no more than 18 OSU classes in your whole career, though you can petition for an exception for circumstances beyond your control. Rule
WCComplete withdrawalNo credit and no grade points, so it stays out of your GPA. Rule
S or USatisfactory or Unsatisfactory, a grading option you chooseNeither counts in your GPA. Your instructor enters a letter grade, and the Registrar turns A through C– into S and D+ through F into U. A U earns no credit. You need your advisor’s or dean’s approval, you can switch to or from S/U through the end of the seventh full week, and at most 36 S/U credits from OSU count toward your degree. S and U don’t make a GPA, but they can still affect your academic standing. Rule
P or NPass or No Credit, in courses graded only that wayNeither counts in your GPA. P earns credit toward graduation; N earns none. Departments, not students, choose P/N grading for a course. Rule
AUD or WAUAudit, or withdrawal from an audited courseNo credit and no grade, so neither touches your GPA. Rule
RThesis in progressGives credit but no grade points, so it stays out of your GPA. Rule
NGNo basis for a grade, assigned by the Office of the RegistrarAR 17 lists the NG, but neither AR 19’s list of marks left out of the GPA nor any other Oregon State page read here says how an NG counts in your GPA. Rule
Repeated courseYou took the same course againWhen you repeat an OSU course, the grade from each attempt appears on your record, but only the second attempt counts toward your credits, requirements and GPA. That holds even if your second grade is lower. Your college, school or department may use an attempt after the second to meet a course requirement. For repeats, an attempt is a final A–F, S, U, P or NP grade or an I/alternate grade; a W isn’t in the list. If you retake a course you have an I in, the second taking counts even if the I later defaults. You can’t repeat on S/U a course you first took for a letter grade. Courses the catalog lists as repeatable (activity courses, research, seminars, selected topics) are outside this rule: in a course approved for repeated credit, each attempt counts until the course’s limit, and repeats past it are left out. Academic Fresh Start is the only other way to take grades out: if you’ve been away from OSU more than five years, then earn 24 letter-graded units over consecutive terms with a 2.5 GPA after returning, you can petition once to exclude one to three back-to-back earlier terms; those grades stay on your transcript. MyDegrees’ Calculated Degree GPA may not apply the repeat rules correctly, so check your transcript GPA. Rule
Transfer creditGrades from another collegeTransfer credits and grades don’t count in your OSU GPA. Your transcript shows a Total Institution GPA (OSU classes only), a Total Transfer GPA (classes taken elsewhere) and an Overall GPA (all classes from all schools at your degree level). Academic standing and the 2.00 to graduate use your OSU cumulative GPA. No more than 135 quarter credits from other schools count toward your degree’s credits, and at least 45 of your last 75 credits (or 150 in all) must be earned in residence at OSU. Each semester credit transfers as 1.5 quarter credits. To be considered for transfer admission with 24 or more graded quarter credits, you need a transfer GPA of at least 2.25. The repeat rule covers only OSU courses. Rule

Oregon State doesn’t round a GPA up; it cuts it after two decimals. A 3.455 shows as 3.45 on your transcript.

A worked example

A retake replaces your first grade even when it’s lower, and Oregon State cuts the GPA instead of rounding it. Say you earn a D in a 4-credit course, a B+ in another 4-credit course and an A in a 3-credit course: (1.0 × 4 + 3.3 × 4 + 4.0 × 3) ÷ 11 = 29.2 ÷ 11 = 2.654…, shown as 2.65. You retake the first course and earn a C+, so only the C+ counts: (2.3 × 4 + 3.3 × 4 + 4.0 × 3) ÷ 11 = 34.4 ÷ 11 = 3.127…, which Oregon State shows as 3.12, not 3.13. Had the retake been an F, the F would count instead of the D: 25.2 ÷ 11 = 2.29.

The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your Oregon State academic record.
