UC Berkeley’s GPA adds 0.3 for a plus and takes 0.3 off for a minus, but an A+ counts the same 4.0 as an A, and P/NP, incompletes and in-progress grades stay out. A retake of a D+ or lower replaces the first grade only for your first 12 repeated units; after that, both grades count.
UC Berkeley’s points: A+ 4.00, A 4.00, A− 3.70, B+ 3.30 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same units again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future units beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows UC Berkeley’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at UC Berkeley
UC Berkeley multiplies each course’s grade points by its units, adds them up and divides by the units that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at UC Berkeley
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no units. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

Code
What it means
In the UC Berkeley GPA
P or NP
Passed (C− or better) or Not Passed
Left out of your GPA. You can choose P/NP for a letter-graded course only in good standing (2.0 or better), and P/NP units can be at most one-third of the units you pass at Berkeley. A course for your major needs your college’s approval to take P/NP. Rule
I
Incomplete: passing work left unfinished for reasons beyond your control
Left out of your GPA while it stands. A fall I must be finished 30 days before the next fall semester starts, and a spring or summer I 30 days before the next spring semester, or by the instructor’s earlier deadline. If it isn’t replaced in time it becomes an F (or NP), which then counts. You can keep up to two I grades from turning into F or NP, but then you can never earn units or grade points for that course. Rule
IP
In Progress, in a course that runs over more than one term
Left out of your GPA until one final grade replaces it. If you don’t finish the sequence, it becomes an I. Rule
You may retake only a course you got a D+, D, D−, F or NP in, and a D+ or lower must be retaken for a letter grade. For your first 12 repeated units, only the most recent grade counts, even if it’s lower. Beyond 12 units, both grades count. A third attempt needs your dean’s approval, or it stays out of your GPA. Every attempt stays on your transcript. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Your GPA counts only courses taken in the University of California. UC Berkeley Extension XB courses taken after you enroll also count. Rule

Academic Notice
Also if you earn no letter grades in a fall or spring semester, even all Passes. To return to good standing you need a 2.0 term and 2.0 cumulative UC GPA by the end of your next fall or spring semester; otherwise you are reviewed and may be disqualified. While on notice you can’t take a letter-graded course P/NP. Summer grades alone can’t place you on notice or clear it. Other colleges set their own rules. Full rule

Dean’s Honors
At least 13 letter-graded units that fall or spring semester, and no I, NR or NP grades or grades not yet submitted. Full rule
At least 50 UC units, 43 of them letter-graded, and 30 completed at Berkeley. In Letters & Science, Fall 2025 to Summer 2026 graduates needed 3.852, 3.936 and 3.989. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
Grade replacement covers only your first 12 repeated units. With 10 units already used, a 4-unit course failed with an F and retaken for a B counts both grades. With a 3-unit A− that term: (0 × 4 + 3.0 × 4 + 3.7 × 3) ÷ 11 = 2.10. Within the limit only the B would count: (3.0 × 4 + 3.7 × 3) ÷ 7 = 3.30.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your UC Berkeley academic record.
For any other college, the college GPA calculator starts on the common plus/minus 4.0 points and takes your school’s own. Cumulative GPA combines terms you already have, and the GPA guide answers what a GPA means.
