Illinois State grades without pluses or minuses: an A is 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F 0, and there’s no A+. An F is the only grade that counts as zero, and you get one if you stop going to a class without officially withdrawing; an incomplete with no Incomplete Grade Form lapses to an F after a year. Retake a course at Illinois State and your most recent letter grade replaces the earlier one in your cumulative GPA, though both stay on your transcript.
Illinois State’s points: A 4.00, B 3.00, C 2.00, D 1.00 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows Illinois State’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at Illinois State
Illinois State multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at Illinois State
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

What it means
In the Illinois State GPA
F
Failing
Counts 0 points, and its hours count in your GPA. You get an F if you’re in a course all semester and don’t earn a passing grade, if you stop attending without officially withdrawing, or if you register and don’t complete the course requirements. Rule
WX
Withdrawal: you officially withdrew from the course after the tenth day of the term
Doesn’t count in your GPA. If you withdraw before the end of the tenth day of the term, nothing appears on your transcript. After that, until the end of the twelfth week of a regular semester, you get a WX; for fall 2026 that last day is November 6. After the deadline, you can make a written request for a late withdrawal if circumstances beyond your reasonable control kept you from attending or finishing. Rule
I
Incomplete: you’re doing passing work but can’t finish by the end of the term for reasons beyond your control, such as illness
Stays out of your GPA while it’s an I. You must have attended to within three weeks of the end of the semester (one week in summer). The Incomplete Grade Form records your remaining work, your deadline and the default grade you’ll get. The Grading System page says that if neither that form nor a grade change is submitted, the I lapses to an F after one year; the Registrar’s repeat page says the default grade replaces the I after one year or at the deadline on the form. You can’t repeat the class while the I is on your record. Rule
P or NP
Pass or No Pass, a grading option you choose for an eligible course
Neither counts in your GPA. An A, B or C becomes a P, and a D or F becomes an NP. The policy requires good academic standing and at least 12 hours of college credit; the Registrar’s page says you can’t be on academic probation and first-semester freshmen aren’t eligible. You can’t use it for courses in your major or minor (unless they’re offered only CR/NC) or for Group 1 General Education courses, and the Registrar adds professional education courses. The policy allows six semester hours P/NP each semester and 25 toward graduation. You can switch a course to or from P/NP until the end of the tenth class day, then through the Registrar until the end of the twelfth week. You can’t take a repeated course P/NP. Rule
CR or NC
Credit or No Credit, in a course offered only on that basis
Neither counts in your GPA. You can’t choose CR/NC: everyone in a course set up that way gets a CR or an NC. Rule
S or U
Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory, in a course offered only on that basis
Doesn’t count in your GPA or toward your degree, or toward full-time status for financial aid. You pay all applicable tuition and fees and are expected to attend regularly. Rule
M
Missing: no grade came in from the instructor by the grade deadline
Deferred Credit, in research and performance courses leading to a graduate thesis, dissertation or exhibition
Doesn’t count in your GPA; a CR replaces it when you finish the program’s requirements. Rule
Repeated course
You took the same course again
If you complete a course, or withdraw from it after the tenth day of classes, you can repeat it one time; for a third enrollment, see your advisor. When you repeat a course at Illinois State, your most recent letter grade (A, B, C, D or F) replaces the earlier grade in your cumulative GPA. A WX, AU, I, CR, CT, NC, P or NP on the retake doesn’t replace the earlier grade or its hours. The earlier grade stays on your transcript, and only your last graded attempt’s hours and grade points count toward your degree. You can’t take a repeat P/NP, or repeat a class while an I is on your record. Repeat the course at another college, and that grade doesn’t replace your Illinois State grade or raise your cumulative or major GPA. In courses that can be taken more than once, each grade counts. Many professional and graduate schools recalculate your GPA with every course you attempted. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Only grades you earn at Illinois State count in your GPA; transfer grades don’t. A course with a D or better, or a passing mark such as P, CR, CT or S, can transfer; a course with an F, U or NC can’t, and neither can remedial work. Up to 70 semester hours from community colleges and 90 from four-year schools count, and a quarter hour counts as 0.7 semester hours. At least 30 of your last 60 hours must be at Illinois State. For transfer admission, Illinois State counts all your college courses except developmental ones, and for a course you repeated at the same school it uses your highest grade. Rule

Academic Good Standing
Only grades earned at Illinois State count. Your standing is checked on your cumulative GPA at the end of fall, spring and summer. Full rule
Below 2.0 for the term, 2.0 or higher cumulative
Academic Warning
From University College. If your GPA doesn’t improve, you’re placed on probation; with a previous probation history, you’re dismissed. Full rule
At the end of any semester except summer. After a full fall or spring semester away, you can petition the Reinstatement Committee; if you took courses elsewhere, you need at least a C average (2.00) in all of them since you left. Full rule
2.00 at Illinois State, in your major and in your minor
Minimum GPAs to graduate
The overall 2.00 is on all Illinois State courses graded A to F. Some majors require more. In education majors, a course with a grade below C can’t count toward your required program coursework. Full rule
3.65 term GPA
Dean’s List
On 12 or more semester hours. AU, P/NP, CR/CT and WX courses, and courses finished after the official end of the semester, don’t count toward the 12. The Registrar’s page says the list is issued each fall and spring. Full rule
3.65–3.79 / 3.80–3.89 / 3.90–4.00
Cum laude / magna cum laude / summa cum laude
You need at least 30 semester hours at Illinois State, and only Illinois State work counts in the GPA. Cords are white, lilac and gold. Full rule
Below 2.0 when you left, and a year away
New Start: a new cumulative GPA
Your cumulative GPA restarts from your return, but your major and minor GPAs don’t change, and you can use New Start once. You’re on probation until your cumulative GPA is back above 2.0, and dropping below 2.0 again means dismissal. The pages differ on honors: the catalog says New Start affects your eligibility for graduation honors, while the New Start page says all your Illinois State grades, from before New Start too, are used for honors. Full rule
3.30 cumulative
Honors Program good standing
Between 3.00 and 3.29 you’re on Honors Probation. Honors in the Major also needs a 3.50 major GPA at graduation. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
A retake at Illinois State replaces the F. Say you earn an F in a 3-hour course, an A and a B in two other 3-hour courses, and withdraw from a 1-hour class with a WX: (0 × 3 + 4 × 3 + 3 × 3) ÷ 9 = 21 ÷ 9 ≈ 2.33, and the WX doesn’t count. You retake the failed course at Illinois State and earn a C. The C replaces the F in your cumulative GPA, though the F stays on your transcript: (2 × 3 + 4 × 3 + 3 × 3) ÷ 9 = 27 ÷ 9 = 3.00. Retake it at another college instead, and the F keeps counting: 2.33.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your Illinois State academic record.
For any other college, the college GPA calculator starts on the common plus/minus 4.0 points and takes your school’s own. Cumulative GPA combines terms you already have, and the GPA guide answers what a GPA means.
