UT Arlington’s GPA uses whole letter grades only: A is 4, B 3, C 2, D 1 and F 0, with no plus or minus. A retake counts both grades unless you use Grade Forgiveness, which can take up to two D or F grades in 1000- or 2000-level courses out of your GPA, but those grades still count when your Latin honors are figured.
UT Arlington’s points: A 4.00, B 3.00, C 2.00, D 1.00 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows UT Arlington’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at UT Arlington
UT Arlington multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at UT Arlington
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.
How UT Arlington counts each code
Code
What it means
In the UT Arlington GPA
P or F
Pass or Fail, in a course taken pass/fail
A P stays out of your GPA. An F counts like any other F, 0 points, and pulls your GPA down. Only majors in Engineering, Liberal Arts, Science and Nursing can take courses pass/fail, and you must tell your instructor by the Census Date. Rule
F in a developmental course
A fail in a course you were placed in because of your TSI status
Developmental courses are graded pass/fail, and an F in one doesn’t count in your GPA. Rule
I
Incomplete: circumstances kept you from finishing the work during the term
Left out of your GPA while it stands. If it isn’t removed by the end of the final exam period of the next term (summer sessions don’t count), it turns into an F automatically. Don’t re-enroll in the course while the I is on your record. Rule
W
Withdrawn: a course you dropped for academic reasons
Left out of your GPA. You can drop with a W until the two-thirds point of the term. If you started at a Texas public college as a first-time freshman in fall 2007 or later, you can drop no more than six courses in your whole undergraduate career. Rule
Q
Withdrawn, no penalty: you withdrew from the university or had an approved non-academic exception
Left out of your GPA, and it doesn’t count toward the six-drop limit. Withdrawing from all your courses in a term doesn’t count toward the limit either. Rule
You can repeat a course only if your earlier grade was below C, and without a forgiveness petition every attempt counts in your GPA. If you first enrolled in fall 2013 or later, Grade Forgiveness lets you remove a D or F earned in a 1000- or 2000-level UT Arlington course from your GPA, two times in all; the grade stays on your transcript. Grade substitution means retaking the course at UT Arlington and filing after the second grade is known. Grade omission, for one course only, needs no retake but works only if you change majors, the course isn’t required in the new major, and you never re-enter the old one. Forgiveness doesn’t cover pass/fail courses, transfer courses or grades from disciplinary action, isn’t open to second-bachelor’s students, and must be used before your final semester. Forgiven grades still count in the GPA for Latin honors. If you entered between fall 2006 and summer 2013, Grade Exclusion can remove up to three D or F grades (only one at the 3000/4000 level), and those also count for Latin honors. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Grades from any other college stay out of your UT Arlington GPA, though accepted transfer hours add to your total hours. Retaking a UT Arlington course somewhere else won’t change your GPA. Credit by exam gives no grade and no grade points. Your academic standing rests only on UT Arlington coursework. Rule

Also required
Below 2.00 cumulative GPA
Academic Probation 1 (2.00 or higher is good standing)
In your next term you must earn a 2.20 semester GPA, take 3 to 14 hours and meet with an advisor. Raise your cumulative GPA to 2.00 and you return to good standing. Miss the term requirements while still below 2.00 and you move to Academic Probation 2, then to Academic Suspension 1 (one fall or spring term away) and Academic Suspension 2 (12 months away, then reapply). Full rule
3.50 or higher semester GPA
Dean’s List
At least 12 hours that term, not counting pass/fail work, plus 30 hours earned in residence with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Each college awards it to its own majors. First-time freshmen with fewer than 30 hours earned at UT Arlington make the Freshman Distinction roll on the same 3.50 lines. Full rule
4.00 semester GPA
President’s List
At least 12 hours that term, not counting pass/fail work, plus 30 hours earned in residence with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Open to undergraduates in every major. Full rule
3.500 or higher overall GPA
Latin honors: cum laude 3.500 to 3.699, magna cum laude 3.700 to 3.899, summa cum laude 3.900 to 4.000
At least 45 hours completed in residence at UT Arlington. A strong finish can lift you one level: cum laude with 3.300 to 3.499 overall and 3.500 to 3.699 in the semesters holding your last 45 hours in residence, magna with 3.500 to 3.699 overall and 3.700 to 3.899 in those semesters, summa with 3.700 or higher overall and 3.900 or higher in those semesters. Forgiven and excluded grades count in this GPA. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
A forgiven F leaves your GPA but comes back for Latin honors. Say you fail a 3-hour 1000-level course, retake it for an A and file for grade substitution, and also earn an A, an A and a B in three more 3-hour courses. Your GPA: (4 × 3 + 4 × 3 + 4 × 3 + 3 × 3) ÷ 12 = 45 ÷ 12 = 3.75, magna cum laude range. For Latin honors the F counts again: (0 × 3 + 45) ÷ 15 = 3.00, below even the 3.300 floor of the last-45-hours route.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your UT Arlington academic record.
