Virginia Tech grades on plus and minus: A is 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3 and so on down to D− 0.7 and F 0.0. A retake doesn’t replace anything: when you repeat a course graded C− or below, both grades count in your GPA. Pass/fail P, W and incompletes stay out, but an F taken pass/fail counts.
Virginia Tech’s points: A 4.00, A− 3.70, B+ 3.30, B 3.00 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows Virginia Tech’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at Virginia Tech
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.
How Virginia Tech counts each code
Code
What it means
In the Virginia Tech GPA
P or F
Pass or fail: a P needs a D or better, and a D− fails
A P stays out of your GPA, but an F taken pass/fail counts like any F. You can choose pass/fail once you have 30 credits at Virginia Tech and a 2.0 GPA, for up to 12 credits of your degree, never for a required or Pathways course. Rule
W
A course you withdrew from under the withdrawal policy
Shown on your transcript, but left out of both your GPA hours and your GPA. Rule
I
Incomplete: work other than the final left unfinished through illness or circumstances beyond your control
Left out of your GPA unless it turns into an F. For a lecture course you finish the work in your next term of enrollment, or the I becomes an F. Rule
X
A continuing course
Left out of your GPA until it is graded; it turns into an F if the work isn’t finished in the time allowed. Rule
NG
No grade: one can’t be calculated because you didn’t attend or take part
A retake never replaces a grade. Repeat a course where you earned a C− or below and both grades count in your GPA, each with its hours. A course where you earned a C or higher can’t be repeated to raise your GPA: a second grade there is changed to RP. Since fall 2016 you can attempt a course three times (an attempt is being enrolled on the last day to add classes), and a fourth enrollment is dropped unless your dean’s office grants a petition. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Your GPA counts only hours attempted at Virginia Tech, so transfer grades stay out. A course transfers only with a C or better (a C− doesn’t), and once you are enrolled you need your academic dean’s approval first. Rule

These are Virginia Tech’s published undergraduate lines, each with the other conditions its catalog sets. Your college or program may set its own, higher lines.

What it means
Also required
Below 2.00 for the term, with 2.00 or higher cumulative
Academic warning, not shown on your transcript
Good standing is a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher. Full rule
Below 2.00 cumulative
Academic probation, noted on your transcript
It lifts once your cumulative GPA is back at 2.00. On probation you can take at most 15 credits in fall or spring. Full rule
Below 2.00 cumulative for two semesters in a row on probation
First academic suspension, through the end of the next fall or spring semester
A term GPA of at least 2.50 each semester, or a cumulative back at 2.00, avoids it. Missing the return requirements after a second suspension means permanent dismissal. Full rule
2.00 for all hours attempted
The least you need to graduate
Your major and any minor need an equally satisfactory record. Full rule
3.4 for a fall or spring semester, on at least 12 hours all graded A to F
Dean’s List
There is no Dean’s List for summer sessions, and a pass/fail course in the term keeps you off it. Full rule
3.4, 3.6 or 3.8 cumulative at graduation
Cum laude, magna cum laude or summa cum laude
You need at least 60 hours at Virginia Tech, and the GPA isn’t rounded: a 3.7999 is magna cum laude. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
A retake doesn’t replace the first grade: a 3-credit D retaken for a B keeps both in your GPA. Beside a 3-credit A, that is (1 × 3 + 3 × 3 + 4 × 3) ÷ 9 = 2.67, where a school that replaces the D would show (3 × 3 + 4 × 3) ÷ 6 = 3.50.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your Virginia Tech academic record.
For any other college, the college GPA calculator starts on the common plus/minus 4.0 points and takes your school’s own. Cumulative GPA combines terms you already have, and the GPA guide answers what a GPA means.
