IGNOU percentage calculator

Most IGNOU courses count 30% assignments and 70% term-end exam: course marks = assignment × 0.3 + term-end exam × 0.7, both out of 100. 80 in the assignments and 60 in the term-end exam give 66 out of 100 for that course. Add up your courses and divide by their number for an overall percentage.

How IGNOU works out a course’s marks

IGNOU’s assignment booklets state the weightage course by course. In most courses assignments carry 30% of the final result and the term-end examination 70%, and the calculator starts there; some courses, such as those in the BCA programme, give assignments 25% and the exam 75%, which you can choose above it. With both marked out of 100 and the usual 30:70:

80 × 0.3 + 60 × 0.7 = 24 + 42 = 66

A strong assignment helps, but the term-end exam weighs more than twice as much: 10 more marks in the exam add 7 to the course, 10 more in the assignment add 3.

Term-end marks you need

Take the course marks you are aiming for, subtract 30% of your assignment marks and divide by 0.7. With 70 in the assignment and a target of 50, you need (50 − 21) ÷ 0.7 = 41.43, so 42 in whole marks, in the term-end exam.

Your programme guide sets the pass marks, and they can apply to the assignment and the term-end exam separately as well as to the course, so check it before you rely on a target.

Your overall percentage

Add the marks of every course and divide by the number of courses. Three courses at 66, 60.1, 74.6 give (66 + 60.1 + 74.6) ÷ 3 = 66.9%.

That counts every course the same. If your programme guide weights courses by credits or sets its own rule for divisions, follow it; the marks percentage calculator also takes marks out of different maximums.
