IU GPA calculator

IU uses plus and minus grades: A+ and A are both 4.0, A− is 3.7, B+ 3.3, and so on down to D− at 0.7 and F at 0. Grade replacement lets you retake up to three courses (10 credit hours at most) and turn any earlier letter grade into an X that leaves your GPA, while P, S, W and incompletes stay out of it.

IU’s points: A+ 4.00, A 4.00, A− 3.70, B+ 3.30 and so on.

Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.

Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?

These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.

Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?

Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows IU’s.

One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?

Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.

Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)
Course groups and equal weights

Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.

Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet

Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Save my courses or compare versions

Nothing is sent to us. Untick the box to forget them.

To compare plans, save the courses as they are now as a version, change them, and save again. Versions stay in this browser until you delete them.

Open a file you saved with “Save the versions to a file”, in this browser or another. It is read in your browser and sent nowhere.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at IU Bloomington

A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

How IU Bloomington counts each code
CodeWhat it meansIn the IU Bloomington GPA
XAn earlier grade replaced by a retake under grade replacementLeft out of your GPA, and its credit hours don’t count; only the retake’s grade counts. Rule
PPass, in a course you chose to take Pass/Fail: any grade from A to D− becomes PA P is left out of your GPA, but an F under Pass/Fail counts as 0. In the College of Arts and Sciences, Pass/Fail is for electives only, eight times in all and twice a year at most, and can’t be undone. Rule
SSatisfactory, in a course graded S/F for everyone, or for credit by examLeft out of your GPA. Rule
IIncomplete: most of the course is done, at a passing levelLeft out of your GPA while it stands. Don’t re-enroll in the course; finish the work with your instructor. If no final grade comes in within one calendar year, the Registrar changes the I to an F, which counts as 0. Rule
WWithdrew after the drop/add periodLeft out of your GPA. After the automatic W deadline, the instructor gives a W or an F, and a course you leave without an approved withdrawal becomes an F. Rule
NCNo credit, for a course you auditedLeft out of your GPA. Rule
R, NR or NYDeferred grade in a multi-term course, no grade reported yet, or enrollment in a special programLeft out of your GPA until a letter grade replaces it. Rule
Repeated courseYou took the same course againGrade replacement works on any letter grade, not just an F. When you retake the same course, the earlier grade becomes an X: its hours drop out and only the retake counts in your GPA. You can use it for up to three courses or 10 credit hours, whichever comes first, and replacing the same course again counts toward that limit. You must ask: get your school’s consent no later than 24 hours after grades are due in your graduation semester. The retake must earn a letter grade (after a W, I or NC the old grade stays), a grade given for academic misconduct can’t be replaced, and a replacement can’t be reversed. Some schools don’t allow it in courses required for a major, minor or certificate. Without replacement, every attempt counts in your GPA. In the College of Arts and Sciences, file the form by 5:00 p.m. Friday of finals week for it to count toward that term’s academic standing. Rule
Transfer creditGrades from another collegeOnly credits earned at Indiana University count in your GPA. Transfer credit shows as T, and credit by exam (AP, IB and others) is usually recorded as S; neither counts in your GPA. Rule

A worked example

Grade replacement works on any letter grade, not just an F. A 4-credit C retaken for an A, plus a 3-credit B: with replacement, the C becomes an X and drops out, (4.0 × 4 + 3.0 × 3) ÷ 7 = 3.57. Without it, all three count: (2.0 × 4 + 4.0 × 4 + 3.0 × 3) ÷ 11 = 3.00.

The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your IU Bloomington academic record.
