ASU’s GPA divides honor points by the hours that carry a letter grade: A+ is 4.33, A 4.00, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33 and so on down to E at 0.00, with no C−, D+ or D−, and the cumulative GPA is capped at 4.00. W, P, Y, I, X, NR and Z stay out of it, while EN, EU and XE count as an E.
ASU’s points: A+ 4.33, A 4.00, A− 3.67, B+ 3.33 and so on.
The plus/minus cutoffs Wikipedia lists for US colleges: A+ from 97%, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80 and so on down to D- at 60. It is not universal, so use your syllabus's cutoffs when they differ.Source: Wikipedia, “Academic grading in the United States”.

Each letter starts at its lowest percentage and runs up to the next letter.
Rounding and decimal places
Follow your syllabus. A displayed percentage can round up while the unrounded score stays below a cutoff.
Only changes how results are shown. Extra places appear when rounding would push a score over a letter cutoff.
A letter typed as a score counts as the lowest percentage for that letter on this scale. Use the original percentage when you have it.
Only scales that publish GPA points can convert a percentage. Check that your school uses these same points.

Include your earlier GPA
Quality points are the more exact input when the displayed GPA has already been rounded. Do not include these same credits again in the course rows.
Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?
These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.
Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?
Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows ASU’s.
One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?
Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.
Compare with a GPA line (dean's list, scholarship, good standing)Course groups and equal weights
Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.
Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet
Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

Grade points at ASU
ASU multiplies each course’s grade points by its credit hours, adds them up and divides by the hours that count. Enter your courses above with these points already set.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at ASU
A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.
Incomplete, when illness or other conditions beyond your control keep you from finishing
Left out of the GPA. If you don’t finish within one calendar year, it turns into an E (0.00), and it is treated as an E when graduation requirements are checked. Rule
A D or E (including EN, EU and XE) can be retaken only once, and only a retake at ASU removes the old grade. For students admitted fall 2008 or later, up to 12 repeated hours work as grade replacement: both grades stay on the transcript, but only the higher one counts in the cumulative GPA. Past 12 hours, the cumulative GPA uses the average of the grades. A C or better generally can’t be repeated for credit, Independent Learning courses can’t be used for a retake, and once you graduate you can’t delete a grade from before your ASU bachelor’s degree. Rule
Transfer credit
Grades from another college
Transfer grades stay out of the ASU GPA, which uses only ASU coursework; ASU accepts transfer courses with a C− or better. A course retaken at another school doesn’t replace an ASU grade, and graduation honors use ASU resident coursework only. Rule
ASU GPA lines
These are ASU’s published undergraduate lines, each with the other conditions its catalog sets. Your college or program may set its own, higher lines.

What it means
Also required
Below 2.00 cumulative after your first semester
Academic warning
You can still enroll: warning counts as conditional good standing. Good standing means a 2.00 cumulative GPA or higher, and a college may set higher GPA standards. A 2.00 cumulative GPA in ASU courses is also the minimum to graduate. Full rule
Below 2.00 cumulative in a later semester
Academic probation, also given if a warning hasn’t been cleared after one semester
You can still enroll. On probation, a 2.00 semester GPA without a 2.00 cumulative can mean continuing probation; a semester GPA below 2.00 leads to disqualification, which your college or school decides, and you can’t enroll in fall or spring unless readmitted. Full rule
3.50 or higher in a semester
Dean’s list
At least 12 graded hours (A+ through E) that semester, in residence at ASU. The list is made only for fall and spring semesters. Full rule
3.40 or higher ASU cumulative
Graduation with academic recognition: cum laude 3.40–3.59, magna cum laude 3.60–3.79, summa cum laude 3.80–4.00
Only ASU resident coursework counts. Bachelor’s degrees only. The honor appears on the diploma and the ASU transcript. Full rule
To see how far you are from one of them, enter it under “Compare with a GPA line” in the calculator, or as your target in the target GPA planner.
A worked example
An A+ is worth 4.33, more than an A, so it can pull up a lower grade. A 3-credit A+ and a 3-credit B−: (4.33 × 3 + 2.67 × 3) ÷ 6 = 3.50. Even straight A+ grades, though, leave the cumulative GPA at 4.00, its cap.
The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your ASU academic record.
For any other college, the college GPA calculator starts on the common plus/minus 4.0 points and takes your school’s own. Cumulative GPA combines terms you already have, and the GPA guide answers what a GPA means.
