Syracuse GPA calculator

Syracuse uses three-decimal grade points: an A is 4.000, A− 3.667, B+ 3.333, B 3.000, B− 2.667, C+ 2.333, C 2.000, C− 1.667, D 1.000 and F 0. There’s no A+ or D+, and the D− is only for Law students. An F counts as zero, and so does an Incomplete (I), which calculates as an F until your final grade replaces it; a WD, P or audit stays out. Retake a course at Syracuse and the earlier grade can be flagged out of your GPA: most schools and colleges count the higher grade, but Whitman and Newhouse count the most recent one. Your GPA is carried to three decimals and never rounded up.

Syracuse’s points: A 4.000, A− 3.667, B+ 3.333, B 3.000 and so on.

Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?

These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.

Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?

Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows Syracuse’s.

One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?

Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.

Course groups and equal weights

Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.

Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet

Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

To compare plans, save the courses as they are now as a version, change them, and save again. Versions stay in this browser until you delete them.

Open a file you saved with “Save the versions to a file”, in this browser or another. It is read in your browser and sent nowhere.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at Syracuse

A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

How Syracuse counts each code
CodeWhat it meansIn the Syracuse GPA
FLowest letter grade, 0 grade points per creditCounts 0 grade points, and its credit hours count in your GPA, so it pulls your GPA down. You earn no credit for it, even in a course you took pass/fail. An NG that isn’t corrected in time becomes an F, and a leave of absence taken after the withdrawal deadline but before the semester ends gives you an F in every class. A retake can take an F out of your GPA (see retakes below). Rule
DLowest passing letter grade for undergraduates, 1.000 grade points per creditCounts 1.000. The D− (.667) is available only to Law students in LAW courses, so your grades go from D to F. In Engineering and Computer Science you may retake any course with a D or F. A D doesn’t transfer in from another school. Rule
IIncompleteCounts as an F, 0 grade points, in your GPA until it’s replaced. You can ask for one only in exceptional circumstances, with your instructor’s approval and enough work done for a grade to be assigned; the instructor sets a grade from work to date, counting missing work as zero. Finish the work by the agreed-upon date; if you don’t, the Registrar posts the letter grade the instructor indicated. You can’t register for the course again to clear an Incomplete. You can’t graduate with one outstanding: if the course isn’t needed for your degree and your GPA meets the minimum, it changes to the default grade before your degree posts. Rule
I + gradeIncomplete with Default GradeCounts in your GPA as the default grade your instructor set until you finish the work. If you don’t finish, the Registrar posts the grade the instructor indicated. Rule
WDWithdrewDoesn’t count in your GPA, though the class stays on your transcript with the WD and it can count against your financial aid progress (SAP) as hours attempted. A class you drop by the academic/financial drop deadline (three weeks into fall and spring) is simply dropped. After that, up to the withdrawal deadline, you can withdraw by submitting a Class Withdrawal Petition to your home school or college. Fall 2026: drop by September 21, withdraw by November 20. Spring 2027: drop by February 1, withdraw by April 13. After the deadline you can appeal to withdraw late, within 30 days after the semester ends. Rule
PPassEarns credit but isn’t counted in your GPA. If you elect pass/fail, an A through D becomes a P; an F stays an F and earns no credit. Choose pass/fail by the grading option deadline (fall 2026: September 21; spring 2027: February 1), and you can’t rescind it afterward. No more than 24 pass/fail credit hours can count toward your degree, and your school or college limits it further: Arts and Sciences/Maxwell bars Liberal Arts Core, major and minor classes; Engineering caps pass/fail at 18 credit hours; Whitman allows one 300-level or higher elective per semester from sophomore year. If you later major in the field, your college and the department decide whether the course counts. Rule
AUAuditNot counted in your GPA. You take the course for no credit; it meets no degree requirement and doesn’t count toward full-time status. The audit deadline is the grading option deadline (fall 2026: September 21). Rule
NADid not attendNot counted in your GPA. You get it if you never attend a class and don’t drop it by the Academic/Financial Drop deadline; it can change your enrollment status and financial aid. Rule
NGNo GradeNot counted in your GPA while it stands: no grade was available by the grading deadline. A fall NG becomes an F after the last day of the next spring semester; a spring (including Winterlude) NG becomes an F after the last day of the next fall semester. You can’t graduate with an NG or a missing grade. Rule
NR, RM or VNot Required; Remedial; Variable length course, grade not yet dueNone of these counts in your GPA. NR marks a course or component that needs no grade, RM a college-level remedial or developmental course, and V a course off the normal semester timeline that’s making normal progress. Rule
Repeated courseYou took the same course againAt Syracuse a retake can take the earlier grade out of your GPA, a process called flagging: a flagged course drops out of your GPA and your credit totals, though both attempts stay on your transcript. To flag, both attempts must be at Syracuse under the same subject and number, so a retake somewhere else doesn’t help. The general rule counts only the second attempt, but the college table overrides it. Arts and Sciences/Maxwell, Engineering and Computer Science, and Falk count the higher grade (Architecture, Education, Information Studies, Professional Studies and Visual and Performing Arts say the same), while Whitman and Newhouse count the most recent grade, even if it’s lower. Limits differ: Arts and Sciences/Maxwell flags one course at most twice; Engineering lets you retake any D or F; Newhouse courses can be retaken only after an F; Whitman flags Management grades only once. You can’t retake a language course after passing a higher one in that language, and you can’t flag anything once your degree is awarded. Retaking at Syracuse a course you had transfer credit for removes the transfer credit. Rule
Transfer creditGrades from another collegeTransfer grades don’t come with your credits and don’t affect your Syracuse GPA. A grade of C− or below isn’t accepted, and a Pass must be certified as C level or better and normally counts only as elective credit. Quarter hours convert at two-thirds of a semester hour. You can bring in at most 90 credits of transfer and other credit (AP and the like). Get your home school or college’s approval before you take a course elsewhere; once enrolled, Arts and Sciences counts at most 16 outside credits and Whitman 12. If you’re on probation in Newhouse, you get no transfer credit until your cumulative GPA is 2.0. You must take at least 30 credit hours and 60% of your major at Syracuse. Rule

Syracuse calculates your GPA to three decimal places and doesn’t round it, so a 2.9999 is a 2.999. University honors work the same way: your GPA must equal or exceed the cutoff, with no rounding up. The calculator here cuts to two decimals the same way.

Below 2.0 cumulative or semester GPAAcademic probationProbation is a school or college decision: you may be placed on it with a cumulative GPA below 2.0, or a semester GPA below 2.0. With a cumulative GPA above 2.0 you can still get college probation for missing your college’s other criteria; Engineering, for example, also looks at your math, science and ECS course GPA, and Newhouse at your Public Communications GPA and two semesters in a row below 2.0. A college may instead impose a one-semester trial with set requirements. Full rule
Below 2.0 semester or cumulative GPA, or under 8 credits (Arts and Sciences/Maxwell)Academic Probation, then Final ProbationThe first time you’re placed on Academic Probation for the next semester; a second time, on Final Probation. Bring both your semester and cumulative GPA above 2.0 and the probation is removed. Full rule
Probation not met; or under 1.0 (Arts and Sciences/Maxwell), under 1.5 (Engineering) or 0.0 (Whitman) in one semesterAcademic suspensionYou can be suspended for not meeting the conditions of an earlier probation or for seriously falling short of good standing. In Arts and Sciences/Maxwell, below 2.0 or under eight credits while on Final Probation means suspension. Engineering suspends you at once for a term GPA below 1.5 or fewer than 6 credits. Suspended students are officially withdrawn from the University. Full rule
3.200 to 3.600 semester GPA (by college)Dean’s ListOnly full-time students qualify, on their home college’s list. Arts and Sciences/Maxwell, Education, and Engineering and Computer Science: 3.400 on at least 12 letter-graded credits, with no missing or Incomplete grades. Falk: 3.400 on 12 credits earned. Professional Studies: 3.400 and 12 credits in the previous two years. Newhouse: 3.500 on 12 letter-graded credits. Whitman: 3.600 on 12. Visual and Performing Arts: 3.6 on 15. Architecture: 3.500 on 12–14 letter-graded credits, or 3.200 on 15 or more. Information Studies: 3.5 to 3.7 for the Dean’s List and 3.8 or higher for the Distinguished Dean’s List, on 12 letter-graded credits. Full rule
3.400 / 3.600 / 3.800 cumulative (Architecture 3.200 / 3.500 / 3.800)Cum laude / magna cum laude / summa cum laudeFixed GPAs, with no rounding up. You need at least 60 GPA-calculated credit hours at Syracuse, and the University rule counts pass/fail grades in them; Arts and Sciences/Maxwell, Information Studies, Whitman, Newhouse and Falk instead require 60 credit hours of letter-graded courses at Syracuse. Full rule
2.000 cumulativeMinimum GPA to graduateAlong with the minimum credits your degree requires (the financial aid office puts a typical bachelor’s degree at 120 credits), at least 30 credit hours at Syracuse, and no Incomplete, NG or missing grades outstanding. Full rule
2.0 cumulative and 67% of hoursSatisfactory Academic Progress for financial aidChecked at the end of each semester: a 2.0 cumulative GPA and at least 67% of the credit hours you attempt, where WDs and both attempts of a repeated course count as attempted. Full rule
3.0 cumulative (2.75 if you enrolled before fall 2026)Keeping a Syracuse academic scholarshipYour GPA is reviewed after your first semester, and you must keep at least a 3.0 each semester, along with Satisfactory Academic Progress. Full rule
Below 2.0 cumulative after seven years awayAcademic renewalIf you return after seven years with a cumulative GPA below 2.0, you can apply for a fresh start. You need a 2.5 semester GPA on a full-time load in your first semester back, with no I, F, NA, NG, P, V or WD grades; your earlier classes then leave your credits and GPA. Full rule

A worked example

At Syracuse an Incomplete counts as an F until it’s replaced, and your GPA is cut, not rounded. Say you earn an A and a B+ in two 3-credit courses and a C in a 4-credit course, take an I in a 3-credit course, and withdraw from a fifth after the drop deadline, so it shows a WD: (4 × 3 + 3.333 × 3 + 2 × 4 + 0 × 3) ÷ 13 = 29.999 ÷ 13 = 2.3076…, recorded as 2.307 (2.30 to two decimals), and the WD doesn’t count. Finish the incomplete with a B and the 0 becomes 3.000: 38.999 ÷ 13 = 2.9999…, which Syracuse records as 2.999, not 3.000.

The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your Syracuse academic record.
