UTK GPA calculator

UT Knoxville’s GPA divides quality points by the hours attempted at UT Knoxville: A is 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3 and so on down to D− 0.7 and F 0, with no A+. W, S, NC, I, NR and N-prefix grades stay out of it, and a retake counts every attempt unless you use one of your three grade replacements.

Raise my GPA: what would it take to reach a target?

These are future credits beyond the courses and earlier record entered above.

Pass/fail or a retake: what would change?

Whether a pass/fail course leaves the GPA and whether a retake replaces the old grade are your school’s rules; the table below shows UTK’s.

One grade higher: which course moves your GPA most?

Each line raises one course by one grade on the grade points above and leaves the others as entered, so a course that carries more credit moves the GPA more. A course you haven’t finished can be marked “Planned” in its ⋯ menu: the GPA so far then leaves it out, and the projection counts it at the grade you chose. A grade already on your transcript changes only under your school’s retake or grade-change rules.

Course groups and equal weights

Set a course's group or term, or mark it planned, in its ⋯ menu. Groups are just your labels: they don’t apply AMCAS or other application-service GPA rules.

Import courses from a transcript or spreadsheet

Copy the courses from your unofficial transcript, degree audit or a spreadsheet and paste them here, one course per line with its grade and credits. Term headings such as “Fall 2025” keep the courses in their terms. Your grades stay in this browser.

To compare plans, save the courses as they are now as a version, change them, and save again. Versions stay in this browser until you delete them.

Open a file you saved with “Save the versions to a file”, in this browser or another. It is read in your browser and sent nowhere.

What W, pass/fail, incomplete, retakes and transfer credit do at UT Knoxville

A course left out of the GPA adds no points and no hours. In the calculator, choose its code or “Not counted”; a code that counts as zero lowers the GPA like a failing grade.

How UT Knoxville counts each code
CodeWhat it meansIn the UT Knoxville GPA
WWithdrew from a course between the 11th and 84th calendar day of classes, or from the universityLeft out of the GPA. You can drop six individual classes until your first bachelor’s degree. Rule
S or NCSatisfactory (C or better) or No Credit (C− or lower) in a course you took S/NCLeft out of the GPA, but kept on your record; you earn credit only with an S. A course you already have a letter grade in can’t be retaken S/NC. Rule
IIncompleteLeft out of the GPA. If you don’t remove it within one calendar year, or by graduation, it becomes an F. Re-enrolling in the course doesn’t remove it. Rule
N prefix (NC−, ND+, ND, ND−, NF)A C− or lower in a course graded only A, B, C or NLeft out of the cumulative GPA, though the hours stay in your attempted hours; it does count in an in-state student’s HOPE GPA. Rule
NRNot Reported: a temporary grade while an academic misconduct case is resolvedLeft out of the GPA until the grade is posted. Rule
Repeated courseYou took the same course againNormally every attempt counts in the GPA. You can replace up to three grades below C in 100 to 400 level courses, 13 hours at most, by retaking the course; then the highest grade counts in your cumulative GPA, while every grade stays on your academic history. A course can be taken three times at most, and a C or better can’t be retaken. For in-state students, only one replacement can raise the HOPE GPA. Rule
Transfer creditGrades from another collegeOnly UT Knoxville work counts in the UTK GPA. College courses taken in high school through another college’s dual enrollment, and another institution’s study abroad, are transfer credit and stay out; UT Knoxville’s own dual enrollment courses count. Transfer grades can’t be replaced. Rule

A worked example

A grade replacement can lift a GPA a long way. A 4-hour D in Calculus retaken for a B, plus a 3-hour A: with a replacement only the B counts, (3.0 × 4 + 4.0 × 3) ÷ 7 = 3.43; without one both attempts count, (1.0 × 4 + 3.0 × 4 + 4.0 × 3) ÷ 11 = 2.55.

The calculator gives an estimate from the grades you enter. Your official GPA is the one on your UT Knoxville academic record.
