Romanian grades and a US GPA

This page gives no US equivalents for Romanian grades: we found no table for them on Wikipedia or from an official source, and we do not make one up. A US university reads a foreign transcript itself or through the credential evaluation service it names, and its conversion is the one that counts.

Send your grades as they are, with the scale above. When a form asks for your average, give it on your own scale and say which scale it is: the converter’s average does exactly that, weighted by credits when you enter them.

What to know about grades in Romania

  • The Bacalaureat school-leaving exam is passed with at least 5 in every exam and an overall average of at least 6.
  • Exam results and averages are written with two decimals, such as 8.60, while the class register holds whole grades.
  • At school each subject closes one average a year: the mean of the year’s grades rounded to the nearest whole number, with a half rounded up in the pupil’s favour (9.50 becomes 10).
  • A 10 is not unusual, a 9 is already seen as an excellent grade, and the typical grade is between 7 and 8.
  • The primary ratings match the 10-point scale: Foarte bine stands for 9 or 10, Bine for 7 or 8, Suficient for 5 or 6, and Insuficient for 4 or less.
