Norwegian grades and a US GPA
This page gives no US equivalents for Norwegian grades: we found no table for them on Wikipedia or from an official source, and we do not make one up. A US university reads a foreign transcript itself or through the credential evaluation service it names, and its conversion is the one that counts.
Send your grades as they are, with the scale above. When a form asks for your average, give it on your own scale and say which scale it is: the converter’s average does exactly that, weighted by credits when you enter them.
What to know about grades in Norway
- Norwegian universities switched to the A to F scale around 2003; before that most used 1.0 (best) to 6.0, with 4.0 as the lowest pass, and older transcripts can show both.
- Some university courses are graded only pass or fail.
- School grades on the diploma (vitnemål) are whole numbers from 1 to 6, and the diploma also shows the average; marks such as 5+ or 4/5 appear only on tests.
- A full year of study is worth 60 credits (studiepoeng).
