Ecuadorian grading system
In Ecuador, school grades run from 10.00 (best) to 0.00, and 7 is the lowest pass.
Example · Average of 3 subjects
alcanza los aprendizajes requeridos (achieves the required learning)
A pass. 7 is the lowest pass.
Each subject counts the same. Add weights to count some subjects more.
School grades: 0.00 to 10.00
Ecuadorian schools from básica media (grade 5) to the end of bachillerato. Students below 7 in a subject can usually sit a recovery or supplementary exam, as each school's rules allow.
| Grade | On the transcript | Meaning | Pass? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.00–10.00 | domina los aprendizajes requeridos | masters the required learning | Pass |
| 7.00–8.99 | alcanza los aprendizajes requeridos | achieves the required learning | Pass |
| 4.01–6.99 | está próximo a alcanzar los aprendizajes requeridos | close to achieving the required learning (fail) | Fail |
| 0–4.00 | no alcanza los aprendizajes requeridos | does not achieve the required learning (fail) | Fail |
Ecuadorian grades and a US GPA
This page gives no US equivalents for Ecuadorian grades: we found no table for them on Wikipedia or from an official source, and we do not make one up. A US university reads a foreign transcript itself or through the credential evaluation service it names, and its conversion is the one that counts.
Send your grades as they are, with the scale above. When a form asks for your average, give it on your own scale and say which scale it is: the converter’s average does exactly that, weighted by credits when you enter them.
What to know about grades in Ecuador
- Grades are written out of 10 with two decimals, and a student needs at least 7 in each subject to pass the school year.
- The four levels are set by the regulation of the Organic Law of Intercultural Education (LOEI), reissued in 2023.
- Younger pupils, up to básica elemental (grade 4), receive descriptive grades only, not marks out of 10.
- Ecuadorian universities also grade out of 10.
