Paraguayan grading system
In Paraguay, school and university grades run from 5 (best) to 1, and 2 is the lowest pass.
Example · Credit-weighted average of 3 courses
Between 4 and 5
muy bueno (very good) or excelente (excellent): your institution’s rule on rounding decides which grade goes on your record. 2 is the lowest pass.
3 courses, 15 credits.
School and university grades: 5 to 1
Schools and universities across Paraguay. A 2 usually needs at least 60% of the marks; some schools and faculties set a higher share.
| Grade | On the transcript | Meaning | Pass? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | excelente | excellent | Pass |
| 4 | muy bueno | very good | Pass |
| 3 | bueno | good | Pass |
| 2 | aceptable | acceptable | Pass |
| 1 | insuficiente | insufficient (fail) | Fail |
Paraguayan grades and a US GPA
This page gives no US equivalents for Paraguayan grades: we found no table for them on Wikipedia or from an official source, and we do not make one up. A US university reads a foreign transcript itself or through the credential evaluation service it names, and its conversion is the one that counts.
Send your grades as they are, with the scale above. When a form asks for your average, give it on your own scale and say which scale it is: the converter’s average does exactly that, weighted by credits when you enter them.
What to know about grades in Paraguay
- Course grades are whole numbers from 1 to 5, and final averages are written with two decimals.
- Each grade stands for a band of percentage marks set by the institution; at the National University of Asunción's agronomy faculty, for example, 60–70% earns a 2 and 91–100% a 5.
- The words attached to each number vary between institutions, but 1 is always the only failing grade.
