Indonesian grading system
In Indonesia, university grades run from A (best) to E, and D is the lowest pass.
Example · Credit-weighted average of 3 courses
Between B and A
baik (good) or sangat baik (very good): your institution’s rule on rounding decides which grade goes on your record. D is the lowest pass.
3 courses, 15 credits.
University grades: A to E

| Grade | On the transcript | Meaning | Pass? |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | sangat baik | very good | Pass |
| B | baik | good | Pass |
| C | cukup | satisfactory | Pass |
| D | kurang | poor | Pass |
| E | sangat kurang | fail | Fail |
Indonesian grades and a US GPA
This page gives no US equivalents for Indonesian grades: we found no table for them on Wikipedia or from an official source, and we do not make one up. A US university reads a foreign transcript itself or through the credential evaluation service it names, and its conversion is the one that counts.
Send your grades as they are, with the scale above. When a form asks for your average, give it on your own scale and say which scale it is: the converter’s average does exactly that, weighted by credits when you enter them.
What to know about grades in Indonesia
- Each university sets the marks behind each letter: a common pattern gives A from 85, while Gadjah Mada University gives A from 80.
- A bachelor's degree needs a cumulative GPA (IPK) of at least 2.00 to graduate.
- The 2020 national higher-education standard named three graduation predicates: memuaskan (satisfactory) for an IPK of 2.76 to 3.00, sangat memuaskan (very satisfactory) for 3.01 to 3.50, and pujian (with praise, cum laude) above 3.50.
- Schools mark each subject from 0 to 100, and each school sets the lowest passing mark for each subject.
- Before 2004, school report cards used a 1 to 10 scale on which 6 was the usual lowest pass.
