Ethiopian grades and a US GPA
This page gives no US equivalents for Ethiopian grades: we found no table for them on Wikipedia or from an official source, and we do not make one up. A US university reads a foreign transcript itself or through the credential evaluation service it names, and its conversion is the one that counts.
Send your grades as they are, with the scale above. When a form asks for your average, give it on your own scale and say which scale it is: the converter’s average does exactly that, weighted by credits when you enter them.
What to know about grades in Ethiopia
- At Hawassa University, continuous assessment (tests, reports, assignments and presentations) makes up 50% of a course mark and the final exam the other 50%, though disciplines such as medicine can set their own rules.
- A supplementary exam after an Fx counts for only 50% of the course mark; the other 50% comes from continuous assessment.
- When a course is repeated at Hawassa University, the first grade stays on the transcript but is left out of the GPA.
- At Addis Ababa University a newly admitted student whose first-semester GPA is below 1.50 is dismissed, and a CGPA below 2.00 leads to a warning or probation.
