Czech grading system
In the Czech Republic, school grades run from 1 (best) to 5, and 4 is the lowest pass. University letter grades: A to F, lowest pass E. University number grades: 1 (best) to 4, lowest pass 3.
Example · Average of 3 subjects
chvalitebný (commendable)
A pass. 4 is the lowest pass.
Each subject counts the same. Add weights to count some subjects more.
Wikipedia’s US table gives letters, not points, so it cannot average these grades: check them one at a time.
School grades: 1 (best) to 5
Primary and secondary schools. Tests are often marked with in-between grades such as 2+, 2− or 1–2, but report cards show whole numbers only.

Universities that use ECTS-style letters, such as the Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT). For its credit-weighted average, ČVUT counts A as 1, B as 1.5, C as 2, D as 2.5 and E as 3; the point ranges shown are ČVUT's.

Czech grades in US terms
Wikipedia’s table reads the school grades on the US scale as below. It is one convention, not a rule: each US university, or the credential evaluation service it names, makes its own conversion, so the school you apply to decides what your grades are worth. The same table reads a plus sign the US way, so a 2+ corresponds to a B+.
| Czech grade | US letter |
|---|---|
| 1 | A |
| 2 | B |
| 3 | C |
| 4 | D |
| 5 | E/F |
What to know about grades in the Czech Republic
- Besides the subject grades, a school report card (vysvědčení) gives an overall result: prospěl s vyznamenáním (passed with distinction), prospěl (passed) or neprospěl (failed).
- Since 2005, schools may give a written verbal assessment (slovní hodnocení) instead of number grades.
- Some university courses end with a zápočet (credit) recorded only as započteno (passed) or nezapočteno (not passed), with no grade.
- Averages run the opposite way to a US GPA: the lower the average, the better, and the Czech Technical University rounds its credit-weighted average to two decimals.
