UC GPA calculator
The UC GPA counts only A-G courses from the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade: A is 4 points, B 3, C 2 and D 1, with no plus or minus. Each semester of a UC honors-level course adds one point, up to 8 in all and no more than 4 from 10th grade. California residents need at least 3.0, nonresidents 3.4.
Example UC GPA, 20 grades
(70 grade points + 8 honors points) ÷ 20
Meets the 3.00 minimum for California residents.
- Without honors points3.50
- Honors points used8 of 12
- Fully weighted, every honors point4.10
UC counts no more than 4 honors points from 10th grade and 8 in all.

How UC calculates your GPA
- Take every A-G (college-preparatory) course grade from the summer after 9th grade through the summer after 11th grade. Your high school’s A-G course list says which classes count.
- Turn each grade into points: A 4, B 3, C 2, D 1. Pluses and minuses don’t count.
- Add one point for each semester of a UC honors-level course, up to 8 points across 10th and 11th grade and no more than 4 from 10th grade. A D or F in an honors course earns no extra point.
- Add up all the points and divide by the number of grades. UC doesn’t round up or down: 3.578 counts as 3.57.
Which courses earn the honors point
For California residents: AP courses, IB Higher Level and designated IB Standard Level courses, UC-transferable college courses, and the UC-certified honors courses on your school’s course list.
For nonresidents, UC adds the point only for AP and IB courses with an A, B or C when it checks the 3.4 minimum. Honors courses your school designates may still be considered when a campus reviews your application.
Capped, fully weighted and unweighted
The UC GPA above, with its 8-point cap, is the one UC checks against the 3.0 or 3.4 minimum. UCLA’s first-year profile reports its admits’ fully weighted GPA, which adds a point for every honors semester with an A, B or C and has no cap, so it can reach 5.00. The unweighted GPA adds no honors points and tops out at 4.00. The calculator shows all three; for nonresidents counting their grades, it leaves out the fully weighted figure, which needs every honors semester, not just AP and IB.
A worked example
Twenty semester grades from 10th and 11th grade: 11 A’s, 8 B’s and a C make 70 grade points. Twelve of them are AP semesters with an A or B, six in each year, but only 4 honors points can come from 10th grade and 8 in all: (70 + 8) ÷ 20 = 3.90. Without the honors points it would be 70 ÷ 20 = 3.50; with all 12 and no cap, (70 + 12) ÷ 20 = 4.10.
