LSAC GPA calculator

Checked on against LSAC’s transcript summarization rules for the 2026–2027 application cycle. LSAC converts every graded undergraduate course on your transcripts to its 4.0 scale, where an A+ is worth 4.33, and counts every attempt of a retaken course while the transcript shows its grade. Passes from pass/fail courses and nonpunitive withdrawals stay out; a fail counts as 0, even when your college leaves it out.

How LSAC converts your grades

LSAC turns each letter into these points, multiplies by the course’s credits, adds them up and divides by the credits it counted. Your college’s own points do not matter here: an A+ is 4.33 at LSAC even where your college gives it 4.00.

The half grades AB, BC, CD and DE (or DF) are for colleges that give them, such as UW–Madison. LSAC’s table also converts number grades and three- and four-grade systems; its Interpretive Guide says how your college’s grades are read.

What LSAC leaves out

  • Passes in pass/fail, satisfactory/unsatisfactory and credit/no credit courses: the credits are reported as unconverted, outside the GPA.
  • A W, and an incomplete, when your college treats it as nonpunitive.
  • Credit from AP courses or tests.
  • Every course taken after your first bachelor’s degree was awarded, graduate work included.
  • The first attempt of a retaken course when the transcript no longer shows both its grade and its credits.

What LSAC counts that your college may not

  • Every attempt of a retaken course whose grade and credits appear on the transcript, even if your college replaced the old grade.
  • Forgiven grades still shown on the transcript. A line drawn through a grade does not take it out.
  • A fail, a no credit or an incomplete that turned into a fail: each counts as 0, except a withdraw/fail your college treats as nonpunitive.
  • College credit earned in high school, for the 2026–2027 application cycle. From the 2027–2028 cycle LSAC leaves it out.

Quarter hours become semester hours at .67 each. LSAC reports a GPA for each year and each college, and one cumulative GPA for all your undergraduate work.

A worked example

An A+ in a 3-credit philosophy course, Calculus I failed (4 credits) and retaken for a B+, an A− and a B in two 3-credit courses, a pass in pass/fail Statistics and a W in Spanish. LSAC counts both Calculus attempts and the A+ at 4.33: 46.32 grade points ÷ 17 credits = 2.72. With the A+ at 4.00 it would be 2.67. The pass and the W add nothing; a college that replaces a retaken grade would leave the F out and show a higher GPA than LSAC does.
