IB score calculator

An IB Diploma score is out of 45: up to 7 points for each of your six subjects and up to 3 for Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together. The diploma needs 24 points and the IB’s other conditions, among them no grade 1, at least 12 points at Higher Level and 9 at Standard Level, and no E in TOK or the Extended Essay. Enter your grades, predicted or final, for your score and a check of each condition.

TOK and Extended Essay points

The IB turns your Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay grades into 0 to 3 points with this table. Find your TOK grade on the left and your Extended Essay grade along the top. An E in either is a failing condition: no diploma, whatever the other grades.

When the IB awards the diploma

You get the IB Diploma with 24 points or more out of 45, if all of these also hold:

  • No grade 1 in any subject.
  • No more than two grade 2s.
  • No more than three grades of 3 or below, counting any 2s.
  • At least 12 points from your Higher Level subjects. With four at Higher Level, your best three count.
  • At least 9 points from your Standard Level subjects, or 5 if you take only two.
  • No E in Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay.
  • CAS complete, no “N” (no grade) in any subject, TOK or the Extended Essay, and no penalty for academic misconduct.

Without the diploma you still get DP Course Results with each subject’s grade. If you retake a subject, the higher grade counts towards the diploma.

A worked example

Grades of 6, 6, 5 at Higher Level make 17 points, above the 12 needed, and 5, 5, 6 at Standard Level make 16, above the 9. The six subjects add up to 33. TOK B with an Extended Essay C is worth 2 on the table above, so the score is 33 + 2 = 35 of 45. There is no grade below 5, so the other conditions hold too.

IB points and UCAS points

UK universities usually make IB offers in diploma points, such as 36 with 6, 6, 5 at Higher Level. UCAS points count each subject, TOK and the Extended Essay on their own, not the score out of 45: the example’s grades are worth 218 UCAS points for 2027 entry. The UCAS points calculator has the table.
