Greek grades and a US GPA

This page gives no US equivalents for Greek grades: we found no table for them on Wikipedia or from an official source, and we do not make one up. A US university reads a foreign transcript itself or through the credential evaluation service it names, and its conversion is the one that counts.

Send your grades as they are, with the scale above. When a form asks for your average, give it on your own scale and say which scale it is: the converter’s average does exactly that, weighted by credits when you enter them.

What to know about grades in Greece

  • Every course must be passed with at least 5 before a degree is awarded, and failed courses can be retaken.
  • Grade inflation is rare: in some courses most students fail or pass with exactly 5.
  • The National Technical University of Athens draws its degree classes differently: 9 to 10 is excellent, 7 to 9 very good and 5 to 7 good.
  • The gymnasium (lower secondary school) also grades out of 20 but with its own bands: 18.5 to 20 is excellent and 10 to 12.4 the lowest passing band.
