AP Research score calculator
AP Research is scored on the academic paper, 75% of your score, and the presentation and oral defense, 25%, so one score higher on the academic paper (scored 1 to 5) adds 15 of your 100, as much as about 14 presentation and oral defense points. Enter your rubric scores for your score out of 100 on those weights. The College Board publishes no chart that turns it into a 1 to 5, so this page does not guess one.
Example: weighted AP Research score
Each part counts by the College Board’s share: academic paper 75%, presentation and oral defense 25%.
Your next point adds most on the academic paper (3 of 5): one score higher on the academic paper adds 15.00.
To reach 70 of 100: a 4 on the academic paper with your presentation and oral defense as it is (one score higher), or 24 of the 24 presentation and oral defense points with your academic paper as it is (6 more).
- Academic paper, 3 of 545 of 75
- Presentation and oral defense, 18 of 2418.8 of 25
The College Board publishes no chart that turns this into a 1 to 5, so this is not your AP score.

How the weighted score is worked out
- Academic paper, 75% of the score: academic paper ÷ 5 × 75. Scored by the College Board.
- Presentation and oral defense, 25% of the score: presentation and oral defense ÷ 24 × 25. Scored by your teacher.
- Add them: a score out of 100 with each part in the College Board’s proportion.
The College Board does not say how it combines the parts into the composite behind your AP score, only what share each part has, so this is the plainest reading of those shares.
A worked example
3 of 5 on the academic paper: 3 ÷ 5 × 75 = 45; 18 of 24 on the presentation and oral defense: 18 ÷ 24 × 25 = 18.8. Together 63.8 of 100.
Where the next points are: one score higher adds 15.00 on the academic paper and a point adds 1.04 on the presentation and oral defense.
What each rubric row is worth
Each row and its points are from the College Board’s 2026 scoring guidelines; its share of your 100 follows from the share AP Central gives its part.

Why there is no 1 to 5 here
The College Board sets the composite each AP score needs after every exam and publishes no chart for AP Research. A 1 to 5 from any calculator is someone’s guess at those cut points.
What it does publish is how students scored. In 2026: 17% a 5, 31% a 4, 42% a 3, 8% a 2 and 2% a 1; 90% scored a 3 or higher. Those are shares of students, not the marks each score needed.
