How the grade calculators work
See the formulas, what a blank score means, and where school policy changes the answer.
The grade you are calculating
A class percentage, a final-exam target and a GPA answer different questions. A percentage measures points earned. A GPA combines course grade points and credits. We do not convert a percentage directly to a universal GPA.
Published scales and basic arithmetic
Grade cutoffs come from the named official school or federal sources on the data page. Schools and individual instructors may use different cutoffs. The formulas use weighted means and the definition of percent; their primary references are linked below.
Blanks, zeros and rounding
Blank means not entered or not graded. Zero is included. The class calculator shows the average across graded weight separately from points earned toward the whole course. It rejects total category weights above a whole course.
Calculations retain full precision. Displayed percentages and GPAs use up to two decimal places. Letter conversion uses the unrounded value unless you explicitly choose whole-number rounding. A needed exam score is rounded upward to the displayed precision so rounding does not understate the target.
When a policy changes
The source date shows when we last checked the policy. Check your current syllabus before using a preset.
Limits that matter
The tools do not infer curves, attendance penalties, pass requirements, grade forgiveness or repeated-course treatment. Choose included GPA courses yourself. Advanced final cases explain their assumptions beside the controls. A result is an estimate, not an official grade.
When your gradebook shows a different answer
Compare the course weights, excluded work and rounding rule with your syllabus. For GPA, check both the grade points and which courses count. Ask your instructor or school about rules that are not stated in your course materials.
Class percentages and contributions
For points, add earned points and divide by included possible points, then multiply by 100. Extra earned points increase the numerator only. Dropping work removes both its earned and possible points. Lowest means the lowest earned/possible ratio, with input order breaking ties.
For categories, multiply each category percentage by its course weight divided by 100. This is its contribution in course percentage points. Divide the sum of those contributions by the graded share to get the grade so far. Blank and planned scores do not enter that current grade. The what-if result includes planned scores but leaves blanks out.
Category weights over 100% are rejected. Weights below 100% remain visibly incomplete; they are not presented as a completed-course grade. A displayed range assumes the ungraded share could earn zero through 100%.
The class calculator retains score rows across modes. Switching from earned/possible points to percentages converts each entered ratio; switching back uses the original possible points for each row.
Final exams and advanced cases
With current grade C, final weight w as a fraction and target T, solve T = C × (1 − w) + final × w. The needed final is (T − C × (1 − w)) ÷ w. A zero-weight final cannot change the course grade.
In a points course, the final adds earned final points to the numerator and all possible final points to the denominator. For a multipart final, completed parts keep their entered share within the exam; the needed score is the average across all remaining parts.
For a final inside a test category, previous tests and the final count equally. An optional replacement raises the lowest old test only when the final is higher; then the selected number of lowest tests is dropped from the combined list. The final is eligible to be dropped. These are explicit supported policies, not guesses about your class.
After applying replacement and drop rules, the needed score is the smallest final that reaches your target. A test that gets dropped at one final score may count at another, so the calculation follows those changes. The final calculator keeps unreachable and already-secured outcomes visible.
GPA, earlier records and targets
A course contributes its grade points multiplied by its GPA credits. Sum those quality points and divide by total GPA credits. A course excluded from the GPA contributes to neither total. Zero-credit courses have no weight.
Earlier GPA multiplied by earlier GPA hours reconstructs earlier quality points, but cannot recover precision already rounded off a transcript. Enter total quality points directly when they are available. New courses are added to that ledger once.
A future target requires (target GPA × total eventual credits − quality points already earned) ÷ future credits. If this exceeds the selected maximum grade points, the target is unreachable over those credits. This arithmetic does not predict what grades you will earn.
The high-school tool applies either your explicit bonuses and eligible grade threshold or the full CPS grade-value table. CPS D and F grades receive no Honors or Advanced bonus. GPA forgiveness, transfer eligibility and duplicate attempts remain choices you must make from school policy.
Curves and exported score lists
Flat addition uses x + a. Top-score addition uses x + (100 − maximum). Top-score scaling uses x × 100 ÷ maximum. Square-root scaling uses 10 × √x. Target-mean shifting uses x + (target − mean). Optional capping then limits the result to zero through 100.
These transformations preserve order before capping; capping can turn different scores into ties. Ranks count how many scores are strictly greater, plus one. Histograms count actual scores in the labeled intervals; they do not fit an assumed bell curve.
CSV downloads include full numeric curve outputs, before display rounding. The easy-grader chart exports displayed percentages and letters under the selected rounding rule. Imported CSV columns are scores only; no roster is uploaded.

A published grade scale is a historical rule. We do not call it this term's rule without a new policy check. Your own inputs remain usable if a source is due for review.
